My rating scale:

4-5 stars = Loved (An album that was able to provide me with genuine listening pleasure more often than not with very few, if any, weak cuts. Perhaps some inconsistencies, lack of variation, or other minor annoyances may put me off slightly, but not enough to mar the album as a whole.)

3-3.5 stars = Liked (An album that has potential to be great, but suffers too many weak or merely passable tracks. However, the tracks that amount to something are usually enough to impress me one way or another.)

2-2.5 stars = Didn't Like (An album that fails to impress me most of the time. It will come through occasionally with a few stand-out songs or an original idea, but is most often boring, uninspired, and thus, unmemorable.)

0.5-1.5 stars = Hated (An album that I find to be sonically and aesthetically displeasing from start to finish. Maybe one or two tracks are tolerable, but nothing else steps in to make the issues I have with it any more bearable. The album was most likely pretentious, lazy, unemotional, or utterly moronic.)

On a side note: The reviews that I publish, as well as some of my ratings, are subject to change. It may be because I'll want to correct some grammatical errors, my opinion has changed and I would like to explain my reasoning, or I got some information wrong (we're all human) and would like to make it right. Thank you for understanding and have a pleasant day.

I think that "A Is for Action" was on a soundtrack to a snowboarding videogame and I used to think it had breaky drumming and a sick keyboard hook. I was 11. Weird feels when I read that review.

these days it tends to be Goo. has more of an immediacy to it whereas DDR is a huge, sprawling suburbia. though that's why it works. i love pretty much every moment on Goo but even the stuff i'm not that into on DDR adds to the experience. anyway, you?

i'm very interested in seeing your reaction, so let me know. a lot of people end up disliking the directional shift, it's more riff-structured and less jammy/noisy. but there's still irreverence and unpredictability to it. Tunic blew my mind when i first heard it and that and Eric's Trip are what made me return to SY until i loved them.

really glad you liked it so much, it can be a bit up in the air since people see it as a "sell-out" album (though what sounded like that in 1990?). i think that teenage angst was what allowed Goo to blow open the doors on SY for me, since i heard it when i was about 18. "Disappearer" spoke a lot to me, it sounded so confident in its frustration about not fitting in but moving ahead. and then "Tunic" just blew my mind, it's still maybe my favorite SY song. it's suitably otherworldly and the guitar riffs on it just surf by. Goo has an usual amount of frustration and ennui in it for SY, who either normally have a sense of humor in their earlier days or are at peace in their later work. it still resonates a lot. man there's just so much great SY stuff.
