Thanks for the comment! I agree that the film's representation of bdsm is not perfect. It's most likely caused by Christian's messed up childhood. But on the other hand, the movie displays his acts of bdsm more positively than pretty much any other aspect of him; the sex scenes are the only time I did not feel creeped out by him, and they are possibly the only times he doesn't at least slightly cross Anastasia's boundaries. It's not a perfect representation of bdsm but it's a fascinatingly unique one, at the very least.
The bdsm stuff seemed all within reason imo. It was all safe, sane, and (con)sensual - never too much of a leap in hardcore-ness, and Anastasia could have said her safe word at any point and Christian (probably) would have stopped. Interesting she didn't do so at the climax of the film, too.
Yeah, the arc will probably be ruined by the sequels. But, you never know - they might change the outcomes of the plots in those films too (one can hope in vain).
