My ratings are wildly inconsistent, with a ton of arbitrary decisions that I'll probably be going back and forth on for as long as I use this site.

In short: 0-2 doesn't do it for me; 2.5 is pretty good; 3 and above is definitely good, enjoyable stuff.

To elaborate, this is my system, except for the cases when it ain't:

0.5 - I actively dislike this and can barely find any value in it whatsoever
1 - No more than 1 or 2 tunes I enjoy, though it's probably more likely that I don't dig any of it at all; much of the album is probably painful for me to get through
1.5 - Pretty similar to a 1: most of it just ain't my thing. Maybe I really like a song or two and can tolerate a couple others, and then the rest is just aggressively boring or painful to listen to. Or maybe it's just a sub-par album the whole way through
2 - A 2 probably has more wiggle room than any other rating. For one, it's where I usually plonk albums in which I can sense some degree of craftsmanship, creativity, etc., but would still probably say "I don't (fully) get it." In other words: stuff that I would hesitate to label as 'bad', but that I don't enjoy for whatever reason. 2s also tend to go to: records which are dull but inoffensive; records which are disappointing but not entirely incompetent; otherwise pretty good records where I don't care for/find about one half of it to be irrelevant; and records which show occasional flashes of brilliance, but have a number of glaring flaws and/or very disruptive low points that make them too inconsistent to be enjoyable as a whole
2.5 - I like or appreciate most 2.5s, though I hope for more out of my favorite acts. They tend to be pretty good records with some significant flaws holding them back from being something special, or pleasantly consistent records that lack that certain something to make them stand out as more than decent background noise. Even among the more disappointing 2.5s, there tends to be some baseline of enjoyment. Mostly. This is also my catch-all rating for albums that I've only heard once or twice (or have heard in the far-flung past but can't remember outside of "I think I liked that") and still feel like I need to delve deeper into before making a final judgment on
3 - A 3 is an album that I like and would describe as good. .This could mean it's a solid listen from start to finish, or that it's a mostly decent/pretty good record that has a few standout tracks that help make the record be slightly more than the sum of its parts. I'll definitely keep a 3 in consideration for end-of-year stuff
3.5 - This is a great album. Either it's a consistently good-to-great record with considerable momentum on its side, or a mostly good one with some incredible highlights. I'd probably only give 3.5 ratings and higher to albums that I consider candidates for 'top 10/20 of the year' type accolades
4 - This is a pretty amazing album. Or a mostly very good one with some songs that are somehow even better than the album average. If I rate an album this high, I really, really enjoy or respect or appreciate it. Might even love it!
4.5-5 - This is an amazing album where I can either find very few weaknesses, or have such a connection to the album that I'm completely fine with its shortcomings because I like the good stuff so much. I'm not sure what separates a 4.5 from a 5--it seems to be a gut feeling type of thing, so there might be some trading back and forth on that front
