Ratings: I will gladly listen to something I rate 3.5 and higher. 3.0 is usually more along the lines of appreciated but not all that enjoyed, or enjoyed but not all that appreciated. Lower than that is not something I'm going to bother with, and really, once you get higher than 3.5 it's kind of arbitrary. I'm hesitant to give anything more than a 3.5 for at least a couple years to see if it'll still be something I listen to in the future.
On taste: People who say they like everything usually like nothing, and those who really do like everything usually know nothing.
I'm trying to rate and review music in its proper context. Therefore, the Cat Power album I give a 4.5 rating might not actually be as "good" as "Let It Be."
Have to apologize if I hate on an album you love and my review isn't that convincing. I tend to not spend a lot of time on something if it doesn't grab me after a few listens. But if I'm unfairly overlooking something, let me know and I'll go back to it.
Some reviews will be long and drawn out after years of listens, others will just be observations based on a couple listens and I might not even remember what some of the songs sound like. Sorry. I'll never have that many readers and it's not like I get paid to do this.
The record collection is my father's who died in 2010. I am not a collector, but these records are a big part of my childhood. It's mostly mid-70s stuff from my dad's high school years, but there's about 1200 of them! I'm going to try to rate and review the ones I'm not as familiar with, but there's a lot of lame stuff in there.

Couldn't agree more.
You could also add: people who listen to 5000 albums a year aren't music fans - they're preparing for the Olympics, discipline: CD-skimming.
