Thank you for the comment. Frankly, nothing on "All Too Well" was striking in any way for me. This may reek of elitism but I'm a musician, not a poet, so if the lyrics don't strike home with me from the get go (like they did with "I Almost Do" and "Sad Beautiful Tragic") I don't really go "out of my way" to pay attention. I don't particularly care for the melodies and I think the song is far too long to stand on its harmony. I understand that pop is not really the place to go looking for modulation; hell, even metal has a very thin relationship with the concept nowadays, but when a song is that long and drown out, specially if the lyrics don't really speak to me, the lack of harmonic variety starts to rear its ugly head... I would compare it almost directly with "Sad Beautiful Tragic", which I see a lot of people on the site rate low, and I absolutely adore. It is absolutely a lyric thing, as the song itself is very static. There it just worked for me...

The lyrics on the album were extremely hit and miss with me. I have a lot of problems with the lyrics of "22", for example, but proof that I don't care at all is that I, in my 25 year old, classically trained, male ass, WILL sing along to "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" because I just think that song has genius melody and arrangement. *Shrug*.
Modulation is more obvious and plentiful in classical works... Literally EVERYTHING has it, because it was such a common practice back them.  It was a procedural thing to change keys A LOT of times in the first movement of any sonata, for example. As a "go to" work to hear modulations at work on a concise environment, you can check out any of Bach's 15 Inventions… They don't run much longer than two minutes, in general, and modulate a gazillion times through generally at least three keys.
Modulation is the act of changing keys, for example: from C Major to G Major. It just hit me that you may not be familiar with the term… It's generally easier to spot modulation in Minor works (for me, at least), because they tend to modulate to their relative Major, so it produces a tonality clash. In Major works, they generally just modulates to the dominant Major, so instead of a change of "mood" (Minor to Major), you only have a change in tonal center (Major to another Major)…
As far as albums… Hm. I've been really enjoying a band called "Day Without Dawn", they are really excellent in that they are one of the few acts I've come across recently who are not totally harmonically static. It's cool stuff. They only have one album, "Understanding Consequences". I have a review for it up, if you want to check it out. You could throw that into the "metal" recommendation, though I don't really see it that way. As for the non-metal, check out "Mouse on The Keys"s EP "Sezession", it's some really wonderful Neo Fusion Jazz stuff. I have a review of that up as well.
As a completely and absolutely shameless plug, I'll be releasing some stuff of my own next year, so you may want to keep tuned to that :P

New Orleans is a big party town.. lots of drunk people, loud jazz and blues music, swinging people, good greasy chicken, and French references.
