You know what's absurd? Rating works of art is absurd. Breaking down an artist's heart and soul into stars and half stars or numbers or grades or whatever cockamamy system you can think of is a waste of time. Art should be appreciated (or despised). Not fussed over with superfluous grading scales. Now let's talk about rating music a bunch . . .
My ratings are usually pretty high (in the three and a half to four range). The reason being is that when I illegally download new music I pretend I just purchased it at the record store minty fresh. This means that I have to listen to it at least once (if not ten times), cause, you know, I paid for it. Listening to a new album while you're texting your friends or surfing the porn hubs or searching for new music to listen to immediately afterwards, is kinda like going on a couple dates with someone and telling all your friends you got laid. What makes music fun is anticipation. So please, take time with your music. Let it coalesce for an hour or two before you jump on here and declare it hipster garbage. When I listen to a really great song for the first time I'm so awestruck I don't know what to do about it. It's not until the second or third listen that I can verify it as a classic. Wouldn't you think the same goes for a mediocre song eventually elevated into a good one?
I do this thing where if I don't listen to an album at least two times (without distraction) I don't rate it, which leaves a lot of albums I have a good idea about but no actual rating for.
Fun fact: Just because something isn't on the level of Picasso's Guernica doesn't mean it can't be great. If an album doesn't say anything new to you or if a song is too simple for your genius-level IQ to comprehend, you're probably listening to music for the wrong reasons.
I wish I wrote more music reviews, but every time I go to write one I remember it's a lot easier if you just listen to the damn thing yourself, you fucking lazy bastard you. Also, I like to write about my feelings, not a song's technicalities or historical significance, which means that most of my reviews read like I'm high as a kite, and that's no good.
I like things. If your mean average is one star, we'll probably butt heads a lot. I also like passionate people, and yeah, you can be passionate about something you hate, but that gets boring and borderline masochistic after a while.
The most pretentious viewpoint of the century: All great works of art are begging to be experienced at the end of the epoch that is your life, i.e., the truly great ones prosper immensely after a near-death experience of some kind. The same goes for contemplating your own mortality whilst enjoying something, although to a much lesser degree. Perspective is key. Just because you don't like The Dark Side of the Moon doesn't mean you're a fucking moron; it just means you haven't tapped into its profoundness yet.
People who don't like music at all scare me. There's something wrong with them. Like in the head. They're like people who don't like animals, or people who murder other people.
Wanna know a secret? Sometimes I dance. Other times I just sorta zone-out with headphones on and after the song's over someone has to poke me with a stick.
I will never finish any list I make. This is not a promise.
Never trust anyone. Never say anything—except musically, of course. Music is safe because nobody understands it. In other words, only in music is everything clear.

I have seen Anomalisa! I enjoyed it. The type of movie that deserves multiple viewings. It was a very thought provoking film and I liked the animation. Did you like it?
Yeah, despite my reluctances—I couldn’t not see Ghost in the Shell, even though I had a hunch it was going to be absolutely terrible. I wouldn’t recommend people see it enmasse, but to me it was worth creating a valid opinion instead of doubting people in my local sphere who actually liked it. I was so very glad my gut was right and that Hollywood did another “oops”.
As for my ratings, yeah, I’ve been rerating since I wiped my ratings a bit ago. Love Neko Case, brilliant songwriter.
