Do you read/speak Chinese at all?
I don't listen to classical because I don't have the ability to interpret series of notes in such a way that I can get some sort of meaning out of it (possibly what's meant by being tone deaf, or at least illiterate), so I try to stick to music that makes what it's expressing more obvious

For american primitivism the obvious starting point is John Fahey--I would recommend John Fahey / Blind Joe Death, although it would make sense to have some background knowledge of blues and other styles of american folk music to see where he's coming from. But it's enjoyable on its own too.
