Hmm, I'm curious to know more about that. What do you mean by "very little proof of it?" And why do you think interest in a genre evinces movie love? Is there no type of film you feel a particular affinity for?

Well, it's a giant fallacy that "movie love" means you love a lot of movies. If anything, I think a critical eye is far more indicative of true love for cinema than ecstatic gushing. If you care about the art, you want a movie to be great, to speak to you, to move you. And there are lots and lots of movies that don't do that. And that's okay. Don't be fooled by the Ebert-Tarantino crowd who thinks genre devotion and reverent hyperbole is what defines cinephilia.

Also, for what it's worth, looking at this strictly in terms of numbers, it's not like you like fewer movies than I do.

Of the 4159 movies I've rated, I've given 1053 of them a 3.5 or higher, which means I actively like about 25% of the movies I watch.

Of the 1488 movies you've rated, you've given 461 of them a 3.5 or higher, which means you actively like about 30% of the movies you've seen.

So, basically, while I have seen MORE movies and therefore have a higher number of movies I like/love, we are about on the same level in terms of the ratio of how much we like out of what we watch. And that 25-30% makes it all worth it!

It is, right?! I love it. I think it's actually a very compelling and vulnerable record thematically, in addition to being totally kickass musically. The exploration of anger and immaturity feels so genuine to me. I think that's part of why people reject it; they don't want earnestness from a "tough" band like Metallica. It's the same reason the (excellent) documentary Some Kind of Monster often gets ridiculed.
