i only made it to the first night (busy on halloween and thus exhausted today), but yeah, it was cool! unexpectedly, the block/chavez set was the highlight :o
just so ya know, if you ever wanted to meet up irl, talk about music and stuff, and see a show (like this, mayhaps), i'd be down for that :p (if you don't, that's totally cool, ofc)
dam.... you go to Winona or something? I'm from Bloomington but I work at the U of M now and I live in the Como neighborhood pretty close to campus, used to live in Uptown
hey :) I identify with that rating urge overhaul. Mine have gone through dozens of reconfigurations in the time I've been on this site, but I've made peace with the fact that I'll never be satisfied.
as for "classical" music (I prefer the terms concert or european art music but w/e), it's only become a recent interest of mine after running out of other genres to explore, and meeting some friends with composition backgrounds who could expose me to the dopest shit. Webern, Carter, Nancarrow, Kurtag and Jonathan Harvey are my current favorites. Kurtag's first quartet in particular is my favorite. so much exciting use of color and, as you mentioned, playfulness. I've listened to a little Scelsi and li, but his extreme formal minimalism leaves me cold. there may be some works of his I'd enjoy if I dig more into his quartets. send any other recommendations my way, especially for weird intricate chamber works like the composers I mentioned. do you go to school for music?
and yeah, GoD is stupidly good. check out those Download and Skinny Puppy albums I have highly rated if you want something similar
