Upon further playthroughs after the initial hype died down, I have come to realize the game is nowhere close to the masterpiece it had the potential to be. I still think it's a *great* game, don't get me wrong and I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as most people act like it is. I also still love the characters and story ideas and Ardyn is without a doubt the best written FF villain and my favorite. The combat itself is still incredibly fun, but the world while it looks incrediblely beautiful, it is also incredibly EMPTY. Probably the second worst open-world aside from Skyrim. There's almost nothing to do in it.
There's a lot of awesome side characters in the game like Cor or Aranea, but they're very underutilized, have a very small part in the game and are basically never heard from again. The side-quests are so bland and terrible, feels like I'm playing an MMO because it's all pointless fetch-quests that add nothing to the world or characters, the only ones I like doing are the Monster Hunts because it feels like Monster Hunter lol. My other problem with the game is camera angles are terrible in battles at time, especially when using Warp Strikes or fighting massive enemies.
Even with all this said, I'd still give the game a 4/5 because what it excels at such as well written characters, an engaging, tragically beautiful story and fantastic action based combat, it's some of the best in any game IMO. Even 7 plays later, I still get so attached to Noctis and the gang that at the end of the game I can't stop the waterworks because they are such well written characters and have great chemistry as friends. One thing I really wish is that the game had more story related cut-scenes and was more cinematic since when it does have moments like that they are AMAZING. I know they really cut down on that stuff due to all the negativity surrounding the XIII trilogy because those games were basically like movies at times.
A lot of what I learned about the FFXV world and story I had to read up on the wiki or learn from other sources like the anime, movie, books etc. I love the world and ideas, but the game itself doesn't really explain a lot of it and I feel like that is also a big flaw. Whereas XIII explained too much, XV explains too little.
Anyways, that should about cover it, hope that helps you understand my unbiased thoughts about the game. :)
I should listen to their whole discography to refresh my memory and to put the albums in quality order.
