Hi, I love that screen-save from NGE, I also have a screen-save from that scene (the walkman is less visible and Shinji is more in the fore-ground) saved on my computer. NGE really had a way to transmit emotions through the images, for all the common poor animation and drawing, when NGE got it right it's hard to find many shows at the same level of quality.

The thing is, I could empatisize allot with all the child pilots from Evangelion (also Misato), even Asuka. I understand where the people who hate the characters come from, but for me when Asuka was down it felt very real no matter unpleasant she was at times.It was like when you know a person, and even if you hate them, you feel for them when they're down.So, on one hand I wanted all of them to be safe and protected, but I also liked that Anno didn't compromise, and let them go through hell to make the story feel real.Keep Shinji/Rei/Asuka safe, but on the other hand don't protect them just to please the viewers; it's a paradoxal state that good fiction makes you feel. The violent and gruesome scenes also didn't feel for shock value, because they carried allot of emotion with them, which is allot of other series who do violence fail at, they show violence without an actual impact being felt, and it just looks cheap.
