Hey, thanks for the suggestions for getting into Thee Oh Sees. To be honest I don't know what songs I was hearing each time I saw them. I first saw them sort of by chance when some friends suggested I'd like them. Enjoyed them so went along the next couple of times they were in town. The first time I saw them was around when Help came out, so I think a few of the songs that got me into them were off that album. The next couple of times were around Carrion Crawler / The Dream EP and Mutilator Defeated at Last, so I guess I like a fairly wide selection of their songs. I've only never really got into their releases because sometimes when I hear and see high energy bands like them live before hearing their studio efforts I get worried that I'll be disappointed by their recordings. I think your thread and list has inspired me to make the effort to give their releases a chance though, since I've enjoyed them live over 5 or 6 years.
hah, if only I could have known when I made that thread that so many people would read it. I've been really enjoying the new Fleet Foxes and some classic old dub. Do you play guitar?
dub's great, it's similar to reggae but not really song or vocal oriented, more like great dense grooves with emphasis on rhythm and pulse and psychedelic textures. Really hits the spot on a summer day when you're just glued to the couch next to the fan!
I've been really slow replying to your last comment. I hope you have the chance to go to a gig sometime. If you're worried that a band might not be as enjoyable for you live as they are on record you could always try going with friends to see a band you don't know or go to a festival. That way you can experience the live music environment without worrying about feeling let down in comparison to listening to an album you're familiar with. Even though I love live music, I can understand your concerns about live vocals. Often the sound techs don't mix the vocals right and / or the stage / venue space makes things difficult. That's not always the case though. You could try seeing an instrumental performance or see a singer-songwriter type artist in a small, intimate venue where they can ensure everything is just right.
I don't know whether enjoying bands live without trying out their records is unique to me or something that other people also do. Thee Oh Sees aren't the only band I have that unusual listening relationship with though. I've seen Bob Log III live many times but only got around to buying one of his albums the last time (or it might've been the time before that) I saw him.
I haven't had a good listen to Thee Oh Sees albums yet because I want to get into them when I'm in the right mood. I think I might take some inspiration from your running story and listen to them as a workout soundtrack but that'll have to wait another week or two because of an injury. I'll let you know why I think when I do get to listening to them and I'd be interested to hear what you think if you end up seeing any live shows of theirs or any other band / artist.
