Without examples, without models
I began to believe voices in my head
That I was a, a freak, that I am broken
That there is something wrong with me

- Burial, Come Down to Us

If you wait by the river long enough, the bodies of your enemies will float by.

- Sun Tzu

They only touch on the darkness. They cloak it in rubber suits and cod-pieces. They go too far but then they don’t go far enough. They tell the kids that there’s a boogeyman under the bed and then stick a lollipop in their mouths.

- Chris Alexander, The Horror of Suicide Squad

In an industry as crazily overheated and unpredictable as Hollywood's, I don't think you can overestimate the value of somebody who (a) reliably shows up on schedule and (b) delivers exactly what the suits are asking for (c) without any drama. These executives are already tied up in knots trying to ratfuck their competition and play their coke dealers against one another, the last thing they want is a fucking screenwriter giving them headaches. Given the choice between an actual writer, and some nodding yes-man who will take the heat for any perceived failures, they'll go with the cooperative jamoke every time.

- ChateauArusi, birthmoviesdeath comment section

The reason was simple: China, Europe, Japan and the US all wanted the Khmer Rouge to stick around and hassle the Vietnamese, so they bought cushy SUVs and villas for every kerchief-wearing KR killer in the camps. The Vietnamese were a problem, uppity and dangerous; the fact that their army had just saved the Cambodian people from three years of pure Hell on earth didn’t matter any more than the fact that the Vietnamese were the natural rulers of SE Asia.

- Gary Brecher, Congo: A Tutsi Empire, Interrupted Once Again By Do-Gooders

Just copy what you see on TV and write it into the script.

- Jon Peters, The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened?

Mr DiMartino and Mr Konietzko: You are disgusting, limp, soulless sacks of filth. You have earned the contempt and hatred of all decent human beings forever, and we will do all we can to smash the filthy phallic idol of sodomy you bow and serve and worship. Contempt, because you struck from behind, cravenly; and hatred, because you serve a cloud of morally-retarded mental smog called Political Correctness, which is another word for hating everything good and bright and decent and sane in life.

- John C. Wright, The Perversion of a Legend

When Europeans came to North America, the thing they said about the native Americans was that they were so barbaric, because they walked around naked. The European women were wearing three layers of clothes. Then they came to North America, and decided that the native Americans were backward because they all walked around naked. And now, we walk around naked, and we say that the Muslims are backward because they wear so much clothes,

- Norman Finkelstein, Charlie Hebdo is sadism, not satire

The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory is that conspiracy theorists actually believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. The truth of the world is that it is chaotic. The truth is, that it is not the Jewish banking conspiracy or the grey aliens or the 12 foot reptiloids from another dimension that are in control. The truth is more frightening, nobody is in control. The world is rudderless.

- Alan Moore, The Mindscape of Alan Moore

Right now, a divide is happening. And there are only going to be two sides. Either you are with the 💀s or you are with the Fascists. There is no middle ground. People from all walks of life – trolls, hipsters, pick-up artists and conspiracy theorists – are coming together as a unified force to oppose the 💀 agenda.

- Andrew Anglin, The Crucifixion of Charles Johnson and the Rise of Fascism

The story is part of the game. It doesn’t exist as a separate script that is handed off to game designers which they are expected to somehow make compelling through puzzles and combat… the story develops while trying to solve the problem of how to make a fun game. It’s like saying, "Why don’t you write a sonnet that’s a novel?" The Half-Life story is really only as good as the game that lets you play it.

- Marc Laidlaw, email regarding HL3 rumors

Power resides where men believe it resides; it's a trick, a shadow on the wall, and a very small man can cast a very large shadow.

- Varys to Tyrion Lannister, Game of Thrones

in regards to Tarantino from , typing this here cause off-topic:

When you have a fascination with killing off characters, it gets boring the 8th movie or it's expected, so I value the dialogue, comedy, different takes on tension and mise-en-scene more in Tarantino's films. I have a hard time understanding how you saw development in Django. He's a blank slate through nearly all of Unchained up until the end, unless we're counting victory dance as development. He was modeled after a western silent killer archetype after all.

I think they get more illogical as time goes on, but at best, the illogical moments fit with what the film is ultimately trying to do, which they failed at in his two most recent films imo.

Never saw 'Following'. Memento is his greatest work in exploiting a mental disorder. I don't remember BB well, Insomnia either, but I recall them making sense, were decent. Prestige had a contrived ending and turn of events, but it fit with the themes present, magic. The Dark Knight, I didn't find i illogical besides when they cut the Joker's demise short due to Ledgers' death. Inception was an intellectual travesty but, again, ends with a play on what they built, showed the audience. Successful storytelling imo. TDKR, was already discussed. Interstellar's end was a farce and mislead people into believing there would be a sequel (though, if it happens and I'm wrong, it would be funny). It really came out of nowhere after the hours of the Kip Thorne consulted script showed much science approved events, they just threw that shit out of the window. Well that's besides Anne Hathaway's motives for her decision being hard to swallow, and the fact that it was the right decision is even more nonsensical but I guess it fits with the 'love conquers all' theme. Really it felt the weirdest to me, a clash of ideologies in his two most recent films.
