Reversi
Genre
Reversi is a strategy board game for two players played on an 8x8 grid with tokens featuring a black and white face. Players take turn placing tokens in the grid spaces, flipping tokens between a played and existing token of their color to match their own. While the games precise origins are unknown, the game was patented in 1888 by Englishmen Lewis Waterman. However, John W. Mollet invented a very similar game known as Annexation in 1870. In 1971, a modified version known as Othello was invented by Japanese salesman Goro Hasegawa. The popularity of Othello outstripped Reversi and became the most regularly used variant in tournaments and casual play.
