Idle construction
Genre
Idle construction games are a type of construction and management simulator that introduces long, real-time wait times that a player is intended to idle for. Wait times for things such as building structures, gathering materials, training workers, or other systems often range anywhere from a few minutes to several days. Idle construction games often include monetization systems whereby users can pay real money using microtransactions to skip these wait periods, or, more often, buy in-game currency that allows them to do so. It is for this reason, coupled with their relatively casual nature, that idle construction games are most often developed for mobile platforms such as iOS and Android and are more often than not free to download.
Following the monetary success of games such as FarmVille and Smurfs' Village, many developers began to create and publish idle construction games over the following years. The most popular subject of construction is a city, which can be seen in games like The Simpsons: Tapped Out, Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, and Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff, but other structures can be seen in games like Tiny Tower and Fallout Shelter.
An important aspect of idle construction games that differentiates it from other incremental games is player input to the placement of constructed buildings or floors, which adds a layer of strategy on top of just choosing upgrades. This makes them mechanically very similar to a construction and management simulation, with the added caveat of long wait times (and often freemium mechanics to bypass them).
