Construction and management games provide the player with a sparse sandbox and require them to build and maintain an infrastructure and/or economy, usually with an end goal based on the success of the construction itself. Examples can include games that require you to build a city to a certain population threshold, an amusement park that earns a certain amount of money, or a hospital capable of successfully treating a certain number of patients.
While a limited number of competitive and collaborative CMS games exist, they are typically single-player experiences with no set protagonist or antagonist. CMS functionality also often appears as a smaller aspect of gameplay in broader strategy games, particular those in the 4X genre.
