Arena shooter
Genre
Arena shooters pit human players against each other in traditional competitive modes such as deathmatch and capture the flag. Some games support AI-controlled "bots" that can replace human players in these modes.
Arena shooter strictly describes a multiplayer mode of gameplay. However, many feature separate dedicated campaign modes without arena shooter gameplay. Examples of these include Quake and Halo 2. Other games, such as Unreal Tournament and Quake III: Arena, lack a campaign mode entirely.
Player character customization is limited to the avatar's appearance or "skin" (character model). Customization does not alter the player's stats, abilities, or starting weapons. Thus arena shooters differ from other multiplayer shooters such as Counter-Strike, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series, and class-based shooters like Team Fortress 2.
