I enjoyed the first 10 hours or so of this game very much. The story has a simple purpose and drive, and a few surprises., The combat is fast and fun. But, I must admit, the story really dragged for me toward the end.

I absolutely loved the first two chapters of this game, especially the second. The premise was simple at that point: you were on a ship that was destroyed by the kraken, and you and everyone else are stranded on a deserted island populated by monsters. You have to find all the other castaways, and explore the island to find a means to escape. The castaways are all great characters that fill their roles superbly. The themes of teamwork, and everyone banding together to clear obstacles are great. The ending of chapter two was legitimately amazing. I absolutely adored this game.
That is, until chapter three. For some reason, they decided that their unique setup for a game was way too unique. They had to reign it in and make it a SAVE THE WORLD story with a mysterious girl with amnesia. Honestly, the story becomes Mass Effect. A perpetual cycle of far-reaching genocide put in place because "I don't know it sounded cool". Instead of protheans, it's eternians. Dana's sections, story, and characters are garbage. Aside from her optional dungeon (which was legitimately great, barring the story behind it), I hated Dana's sections. I just wanted to play as Adol and explore the island more.

Some pacing issues and--without spoiling too much--the late-game's tedious time-travel segments do fairly little to dampen a fantastic experience. The story is amazing, unfolding beyond imagination from unassuming beginnings and featuring incredibly likeable characters with top-tier chemistry. Lightning-fast combat and awesome bosses round out what is one of the greatest JRPGs of recent times.

After playing through a quarter of the map, great game, with some uniqueness with the island survival and enjoyable enough. Arguably the best, but also by far the least interesting and least fun game of the franchise.
Always telling you what to do, it never completely free itself from it, losing the sense of adventure and magic, and feeling more like work, which is the biggest criticism you can give to a game with the name Ys in it.
Okay, that sounds pretty harsh, but I feel it has to be said. I will still finish the game, and also pretty interested what Monstrum Nox will do.
Oh man, this gets hilariously dumb all of a sudden, it's great. Laxia is great too of course. Although her treatment is somewhat stereotypical, it's not all that distracting.
Overall I thought the game was great, but the last few hours of the games was obnoxious with how many times it would stop you for story stuff. While I enjoyed the story, it got annoying how every time you took like 15 steps it would stop you for a cutscene.
There's a lot I like about this but the difficulty balancing feels pretty messed up. I can go from struggling with a boss to obliterating it with a couple tiny upgrades. Even though I'm on Hard and wasn't overleveled or anything, I killed Giasburn (which I think was supposed to be a major boss) in like 15 seconds by spamming the tornado move. It was pretty ridiculous.
