Of all of the Sega cartridges I owned in my Master System II days, this one had the most depth by a very long margin. For the times this was quite a long game, and with the assistance of a lithium battery within the cartridge progress could be saved with a minimum of fuss. It always surprised me that Sega didn't make this a more regular feature for their games, but even when they progressed to the 16-bit world most games still had to be beaten in one sitting.
The great thing about Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap is that it is not just endless side scrolling throwing axes at snails and jumping over rocks. The game requires that you think.

I switched from the Master System original to the renamed TurboGrafx port after the first dungeon and I'm glad I did. Dragon's Curse sounds and looks better, but the smoother scrolling makes for a much better game. Although inferior, Dragon's Curse holds its own to revered classics like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[悪魔城ドラキュラX 月下の夜想曲] and Super Metroid[スーパーメトロイド]. Getting new equipment, unlocking new characters, and exploring the open world is a lot of fun. I could never beat the final boss though. I probably could if I spent time stocking up on potions but eh.

Good game, but having to walk across the entire map whenever you want to buy potions, after you grinded for 3k gold for five minutes, is pretty frustrating.
One of those rare games that almost makes me wishes I'd grown up with Sega consoles. I'd have been completely obsessed with this game if I'd played it as a kid, I just know it.
