Load up your Boltgun and unleash the awesome Space Marine arsenal to blast your way through an explosion of sprites, pixels and blood in a perfect blend of Warhammer 40,000, frenetic gameplay and the stylish visuals of 90’s retro shooters.
Boltgun felt to me like a nice combination of old school Quake and Painkiller. The variety of weapons is good, the gore and sounds of weapons interesting to say the least and the enemies, even though a bit repetitive, add to the immersion to the 40k universe. Even though the music was cool, I prefered to add Darktide's music in the background, as it completely changed the atmosphere to a darker vibe. All in all a satisfying game to play if you like the old school shooter genre. The lack of map was not a big hindrance to my progress to be honest. The lines of the Ultramarine are awesome! I recommend it for those who like the genre, I suggest Exterminatus difficulty. Not an FPS for starters though.

Game is cool, basically Doom meets WH40K. Shooting mechanics are nice, the whole atmosphere and art design are amazing but it suffers from a really boring level design and shitty arenas mechanics, where you have to wait for enemy to pop and spend time just to find the last monster to kill, they really are not well designed. When you've played a lot of those "retro boomer shooter" that came out since Dusk, you can't feel anything than a little disappointment after the WH40k paint novelty is wearing off after few hours of gameplay.

The score is pretty harsh, it's an alright retro shooter, but coming out in 2023 it really isn't anything special, combine that with the genre fatigue that was already mentioned, some disappointing aspects like the lackluster exploration that games in this genre usually excel at, and the fairly tired aesthetic of the stages and the score makes a lot more sense.
I ended up giving it a 3.5/5, and considered lower. I'd originally been heading towards a solid 4 or even 4.5, but in the last third the game's difficulty veers hard into really obnoxious territory. I just stopped having fun in the later levels.
Recent boomer shooters have had harsh ratings, maybe a case of genre fatigue. This one looks pretty good, but I will reserve judgement for when I try it
I mean it's got a pretty loose narrative in the sense that there barely is any, maybe that's why? Other than that this game is pretty standard as far as boomer shooters go and I'm having a blast
I wouldn't say people pay any attention to that, this is a norm in the genre. Maybe it has something to do with the dislike of Warhammer 40k, I really have no idea.
alright, finished the game. the game/level design is nowhere near ion fury. however, the visuals are very impressive in many levels, especially in episode 1. that's really the main thing going for it, the environments.
there are some oddities here. the fact that sprites follow the character and not the camera (which is not the way they work in all of the "natural" boomer shooters that come from the doom engine and Build), the lack of a map (last boomer shooter to not have one was Wolfenstein 3D lmao), the whole locking the player into an arena and having them kill everything before moving on (used very sparingly in other games in the genre, and often only a boss thing)
big credit to the art team for picking up the slack. it's really the only thing that has me interested in coming back.
Really wish the design of a lot of levels was less boring or confusing. Pretty much everything else about the game is fantastic so I still loved it but sometimes it doesn't get to shine as bright as it could.
