As rewarding as the first in terms of fan service, but not only does it play around more with the properties, it's also just a lot more fun to play. To be fair, that's in large part because it just copies the gameplay of at least three other games wholesale, but even the action-platformer stuff is a good time. It's a strange choice to make you choose a small roster of guest characters rather than having them all available to you, and the first few levels are a bit of a slog to get through, but once you get to around the Twinbee/Contra levels it really picks up. That stage where you get to play a Gradius level styled after a stage from a Goemon game is kind of a stroke of genius.
