My 25 Favorite Games I Played Before Turning 25, #17
I have little experience with fighting games in general. Virtua Fighter 5 was the first ever fighting game I played, for that matter. Aside from that, I've played Melty Blood a little bit, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and I've messed around with MUGEN. That's basically it! I've definitely watched a good amount more fighting games than I've played, which might fall in part to following Super Best Friends content for a good amount of years. Enough to know that Pat was the 'Virtua Fighter' guy! By technicality, I suppose I'm a Virtua Fighter guy too, though I'm anything but an expert at the game.
Though I can still judge Virtua Fighter 5 as a video game, and in that regard, the presentation is slick! The roster of characters has a large variety of fighting styles, making each person feel like playing a different game. The visuals and music are great as well. And LOUD. This music is some of the most digitally maxed-out music I've ever heard in a video game, and I like it! Each stage is filled with attractive features, with some stages trying to showcase those 'next gen' physics. Eileen's stage is filled with sand or water that moves around with the characters' legs.
The game's training mode is a source of entertainment of its own. It judges whether you can pull off each move through a one-by-one showcase of every possible move a character can use. This includes moves that are only possible while the opponent is facing a specific direction, or while your character is in a particular stance. Already, there's a good chunk of complicated moves that I will have no way of remembering or consistently pulling off, hence why I don't play this genre more often! This is a lot more difficult than your Tony Hawk foolery. On the other hand, you don't need to know every difficult move combination to play the game, though my basic knowledge of the game's mechanics makes me feel like I'm trying to discover the cheesiest methods to win matches against the AI.
I don't really enjoy 'getting good' at fighting games, hence another reason why I don't play this genre more often. However, the game's Quest Mode at least gives me some reason to dive a bit deeper into the fighting possibilities. Quest Mode gives the player a handful of 'arcades' to choose from, with each arcade featuring a choice of AI opponents of varying skill levels. These AI characters are usually decked out with custom accessories, with a custom username to go with them. It feels authentic! Once you have some in-game currency built up, you can buy your own accessories for your own characters.
Quest Mode has more content than just that, though it all revolves around beating up AIs. I've also briefly played the online mode, though I didn't find any entertainment battling against other human players over the internet. I managed to beat the arcade mode with every character (which you need to do to unlock the busted boss character Dural) and I had fun doing it. Most of my play time was spent on Kage and his jumping shenanigans, though there weren't any characters I didn't find at least a little amusing to play as.

The eternally underrated Virtua Fighter series; I really wish these games hadn't died; I generally don't like Tekken's four-button set-up.
