haven't played the others and it's been over a decade since, but I really used to dig this game back on release. it was a fun, modern take on the Fire Emblem formula that was held back by optimal strategy always being to blitz everything with your scouts.
The English translation is awful. It's one thing to change some lines for cultural context or to preserve the tone, but in this case half the script is rewritten and it's not just innocuous dialogue. Important scenes where characters talk about their feelings and motivations are rewritten to suit the whims of the translator.
good to know, you're one of the very few people out there who probably have had the opportunity to learn this. it's a shame westernization does this, i just felt like the writing sucked.
If there's a broken way of playing a game, you don't have to play it in such a manner. I had a friend in high school who just *had* to play every game in the most broken way possible [FF8's draw system, for example] and that was his preference. I can't say I see the point of doing so.

You are right, but it is somehow difficult for me not to do it.
There's so much to like about this but yeah, the poor class balancing (scouts busted, everything else doodo) more or less ruins the entire game for me.
I enjoyed this. Story's pretty predictable and the enemy AI generally kind of sucks, but it still manages to be a satisfying challenge most of the time, with the exception of a few really BS stages and an occasional trial-and-error approach that basically forces you to play certain stages certain ways in order to win. Most of the time, though, I had fun with it.
Oh and x2 on the bad translation. I don't actually know Japanese fluently or anything but I know enough to recognize that entire sections are completely mistranslated and re-contextualized. Bizarre.
Played this back in the day on PS3, still have my copy. The gameplay is quite honestly a piece of genious design, even if very unbalanced, and I'd still recommend it for the fights alone, great artstyle too, it aged beautifully, but the story is... just kind of a mess honestly, very cringe too at times (let's go to the beach... during a war!).
The one thing that bothered me the most remains the sound effects, which are extremely poor across the board, no idea why they couldn't get some stock library gun sounds of at least acceptable quality.
