Very rare, very early instance of an early physics platformer, on the SNES no less! I found it very cute, fun, and surprisingly mechanically adept despite what it tries (and succeeds at imo). Some levels, even early on, can feel Sisyphean when you spend several minutes making it towards the exit, only to fuck up a button press and find yourself at the beginning again. However overall the simple, yet inventive concept was handled fairly well, and overall I found this to be an enjoyable little distraction.

Umihara Kawase is one of the most inventive and forward-thinking games on the Super Famicom. It's a bit like Katamari Damacy in that they took a really wild concept and executed it near-flawlessly on the first attempt. You play as the titular sushi chef Umihara and navigate through various surreal stages using your fishing rod as a sort of grappling hook. Gameplay-wise it's closest to the arcade Bionic Commando, but stripped of the action parts with a sole emphasis on platforming. The physics system is as dynamic as you can find on the SFC and allows for some clever platforming. The difficulty curve is pretty notorious as you'll need to master the fishing rod mechanic if you want to get far, but if you give it the time it requires you'll find a really cool game that doesn't get the credit it deserves outside of hidden gem lists.
