Does an impressive job translating the core mechanics of old dungeon crawlers like Rogue or Nethack to a home console, though naturally in trying to make it more accessible it loses a lot of depth. Having played a couple of later Mystery Dungeon games, I know they improve on that front, but this is still a surprisingly solid first attempt. It's got the requisite DQ-quality sprite work and music, and even though there's really no story to speak of, Torneko is such an endlessly likeable character and the NPC dialogue between dungeon delves is charmingly written enough that it still felt like there was a decent emotional arc from the beginning of the trial dungeon to the end of the bonus one. Some of the dialogue was even a little poignant towards the end.
