What started as a free weekend ended up with a 30+ hours of gaming, The Division 2 was a game that wasn't sure about but it was well worth it in the end. It's just something about Ubisoft's reputation I guess that doesn't make me want to jump into their games, and I'm glad I finally gave it a try.
For those that don't like Ubisoft's "activities on map", well it's going to be hard convincing to try it because the game is essentially that but with even more than usual. But I felt that this system actually made sense and worked in this game. See as The Division you are in a crew that's trying to take back control of Washington after the government has fallen (ironically following a pandemic!), and various gangs have taken over districts and they control things. So your base is in the white house, and you much take over district by district and block and block to gain more territory. Main missions, side missions, various activities such as rescuing hostages or stopping propaganda broadcasts, there is a ton of things to do and it's fun to paint the map from red to green slowly but surely.
The Division 2 is a looter shooter and it's got guns galore. You will be constantly picking up new and better weapons as you level up, and also trying to improve your defensive gear. Do missions, gain xp, improve gear and repeat this loop a lot... but it's so fun anyway? Yeah The Division 2 has such great missions areas. It plays like a cover shooter and you will be shooting enemies from all angles. Duck and cover, fire a few shots, kill someone and then move to another position while also trying to avoid getting smoked. The battles are great and while I have played games with better shooting mechanics, the game does those very well and all the gun battles are always enjoyable. However I maintain that the environments are one of the best elements of the game, and frankly some of the best I've seen.
After a while the activities start to get repetitive, like grabbing a control point will always be the same concept of invading with allies and fighting a few boss enemies. However the challenge goes up as you level up, the enemies also get stronger so that keeps things somewhat interesting. Still there's always so much things available to do, you'll have so many different places to go in the open world and completing every little thing must take a lot of time. The game also has PvP multiplayer which is incorporated with the game, much like in Destiny you do keep your gear and levels for this mode and it's tied with your main progress. I do not play this mode much but I enjoyed the few rounds I got to try. Also when you complete the main campaign things do not stop there, the end game starts and a new gang has taken over multiple areas that you had previously cleared and they actively capture more making it feel like an active breathing world (also a new talent tree unlocks which is pretty interesting).
I stopped a few hours into the end game, I've could of poured in dozens of more hours of course, but at some point I do want to play other games. I was greatly surprised and satisfied with the game, it did exceed my expectations and did not think it was this good. At first I wondered why play it over Destiny 2, and frankly I still don't have that answer (Destiny 2 is probably the superior game) but on its own The Division 2 is really a big game with so much to do and enjoy. I am not sure I can recommend it to everyone as you do have to be into this kind of grindy shooter, but for me it definitely worked and I loved it. I might even get the expansion at a later time.
