Title
Three Year Campaign, I Outgrew This Game
I started playing The Witcher 3 in 2015 around the time it came out. I've played the previous games, and really enjoyed them as they were releasing. The Witcher 1 had some novelty to it with its bizarre combat system and old-school feeling, European RPG jank. The Witcher 2 improved on everything the first did, throwing the old combat system out the window and replacing it with something challenging and involved with the actual business of being a Witcher. But in both of these games, the narrative elements were the obvious draw. Between W2 and W3 I even read one of the books, and I think fantasy books are for nerds.

When I started The Witcher 3 in 2015, I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me. Many quests, many markers, many things to craft, much world to sop up and marinate in. I didn't think it would take me three years to finish, but here I am now with a save file that attests as much.

Looking back at my experience playing The Witcher 3, I can say that I only barely enjoyed it. In 2015 I was wowed by the scale of it and the astounding feat of presentation that the same people who made W1 had accomplished. I wanted to pat them on the back. But after hitting all the markers in White Orchard over 10 hours, I didn't want to play their game. If I recall correctly, at some point in late 2015 I came back to try out Velen, but after blowing up a few nests and rolling and swinging to death some soldiers, I put it aside until 2016 where I ceased to believe everything in the game was really worth seeing, or every engagement worth having to put up with the combat.

Between 2016 and yesterday, my taste in games changed. I began to recognize how important it was for me that systems act as player expression in meaningful, broad ways; and I came to believe that if a game had to have a story, it better be a story that I influence or take part in through intuitive game mechanics, and not dialogue trees or button prompts. The model of the board game, or the pen-and-paper RPG became the ultimate form which video games ought to emulate, instead of something immersive and unbelievably, but superficially, pretty, i.e. an amazing filmic experience, or OASIS from Ready Player One. By the time I made my way back to Witcher 3 for my last real push to complete it, I had already been sufficiently brainwashed by ludo-games to sort of despise any time I spent with it.

All that really dragged me through The Witcher 3's final quests was its writing and world-building. The combat, progression, the way which the game offered three moods of responses to me as some cheap CYAstory, everything seemed so shallow and unengaging, actualizing a game's ultimate failure. The towns and world-building had the appearance of a dynamic, systems-driven world which a better game would have exploited and made reactive in small but meaningful ways, but by the 60th hour all I wanted to do was connect sign-post to sign-post and get the fuck out. Three games into the series, The Witcher 3 stands as a bitter compromise that has garnered praise which spells spooky things for triple-A games. If no one seems to care that the combat is boring, the world is mostly without mechanics, that progression literally stops having any purpose by a pretty early point, what are these people going to do when writers learn how to merely sound like The Witcher 3, and everyone is too dumb to realize it's just an appearance? This will happen. Eventually.

This isn't a terrible game, but as everyone has launched it so high to hang in the video games cosmos as some shining example of a modern-day RPG (...yuck), criticism against it needs to be harsh and iconoclastic.

It's good, but it's not great
I don't have much to say that hasn't been said; The game is good, no doubt, but I played the shit out of it when I was 13 to 14, now that I'm older I don't think it deserves the praise it got. The story is not that good, neither are the overpraised side quests, the world is too big, the mechanics aren't very deep, and it's just sooo long, I have 400 hours on it on steam, and damn I'm sure I can't add to them now. My final opinion is that The Witcher III is a grindy open world game, just like your average TES or AC, with a better world and slightly better story.

Title
This is my favorite game of all time. To fully complete the game and complete all quests (a reasonable feat) takes about 100 hours. The game is insanely dense with so much to talk about but I'll try to mention the important qualities and some of my favorite qualities.

First off, the game is story rich (to be expected, seeing as it is based off a book series). Not that the game is ONLY narrative, but it is rich in story so paying attention will allow you reap return on your listening investment. There are many different ways to play the games story so just dive in and pick one, you won't be disappointed either way.

Combat, weapons, and armor can be this games strong point and weak point. There are very few armor sets and weapons that create more exciting gameplay than witcher gear. The gear is some of the best gear in the game, has the most unique bonuses, and is the only gear that can be upgraded. Combat was good for 2015 but is slightly outdated. Some people mention input latency but that's really just a skill issue. Timing matters in this regard. Don't press an input to your next attack until your prior attack animation is done. Simple. It's also more strategic to wait until the animation is done because you have more time to plan out what kind of combat maneuver or attack you want to make next instead of just mashing an attack button. It's not that type of game. The combat is trying to be hyper-intricate but fails, really, which I end up enjoying. Horseback combat is terrible but much less advantageous and fun anyway. Horseback itself is fine until narrow passages. In those cases, for the love of Christ, just walk.

The music is great. Different areas of the map trigger different styles of music, all fitting the setting. The visuals are great as well. I rarely experience open worlds dense with geography, climates, weather, flora and fauna, topography, etc. The world feels quite alive and you can spend hours simply roaming around and finding nooks and crannies in forests and cities. One of my all time favorite maps, though, it is not all one continuous map. This never bothered me personally, but there are about 5 or 6 different sections/chunks of open world. Some are very small and not worth spending much time in, and others are where the game is mainly played. The graphics are great for the time and can improve with an impressive PC build.

If you ever forget what's happening there's plenty of info in the in-game codex/compendium as well as an online wiki which I don't think I've ever had to use. I highly recommend referring to the compendium often to refresh memory and get tips on certain enemies, especially when playing on the hardest difficulty.

Every time I play the game, I discover something new. Can't say that about many other games. If you are someone that is bothered even slightly by subtle glitches in audio and visual (rarely mechanical), then this game might bother you sometimes.

Here's a couple tips to create the best experience:

Loot everything, most things weigh nothing, everything will end up being used in some way or another. If it seems useless, try dismantling it for more basic resources.

Play the DLCs, they are the best part of the game

Play Gwent. Just learn it and get good at it. You will enjoy it and it can be lucrative.

Play on the hardest difficulty

Ignore most weapons and armor, only shoot for witcher gear.

Focusing on one single build (melee, signs (magic), and alchemy) can be more fun but just experiment. Nothing is committed because you can buy a potion that clears your skills.

There are console commands on PC and they are easily enabled.

Don't skip dialogue. It's a story rich game.

Read the compendium (bestiary, character entry, other stuff). It really does help.

Every dumb nerd online LOVES this game and it shoots to the top of the rankings for modern consoles even NOW. And it's really time for that to stop.

The combat is AWFUL. Not poorly made, but literally not thought about. Witcher senses are stupid.

Boss fights have no satisfaction and make no sense. Witcher oils don't add anything. A cool world is fine I guess but to what end? The narrative is ridiculous.

I would've liked:

1) more choice over the women I pursue in the game
2) more choice about endings

I get it, as a movie this is a terrific masterpiece but as a GAME, a GAME mind you, I have to give it this score. As a MOVIE (THE GOLDEN AGE OF GAMING!!!!!!!!!) yeah, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine (I'm stuck on the last boss fight) are incredible.

However, finding treasure is tedious and the economy system doesn't work very well. It's too hard to find shops, upgrade gear, find cool weapons or another things to kill.

Think though for a second if they made this game WITH this incredible masterpiece narrative AND great gaming insights, like good economic system (currency), more control by players like Grand Theft Auto, better weapons, better combat, and THEN (and only then) turn on the Witcher senses.

Alright then we'd really have something.

Overall, the player is small and has little control against this world and narrative and that sucks. I buy games to game not watch movies, but as a movie letting you game sometimes (whenever it's convenient) yeah, it's fine. For as much savagery you should able to have a lot more.

Biggest problem with this game is Geralt is way underpowered. Let this guy stick someone he's not supposed to--let him be the dark witcher! Let him be occult black magic Geralt!

Until that day comes who cares? I hate goodie-goodie Geralt fixing people's plumbing, let this guy be the superstar and hoist upon his own petard all he wants!

The sexy women: good idea. Ciri? Good idea. Story? Great idea. Now implement an actual combat system. And then let players really choose where to go and give the powerful tools to do it and create their own magical world and OK, we got something here.

I look forward to the days of Dark Geralt's reign.
///

Finished the game FINALLY. Detlaf was a huge jerk! Took me this whole game to learn how to roll, apparently. Ending was stunning. Definitely a 5/5 game but didn't come together until the very end. I wouldn't mind a NG+ at some point.

TW3, Origins, Unity
• TW3: only tolerable in Polish or German
• Origins: you absolutely need the Pharaohs DLC (for early game level boosting)
• Unity: only tolerable in French or German
• Brotherhood: does not run well on newer machines
• AC3
• Odyssey: not an AC game, too grindy and only tolerable playing as Kassandra
• Syndicate
• Mirage: basically, an improved version of Revelations and Valhalla

AC2 is a good game with very outdated mechanics. I did not enjoy AC1 or AC4 and I hated Rogue.

The Best Videogame Ever Made
Yeah I said it. It is the best ever. I had never heard of all the negativity surrounding this game until I came to this site. The gameplay doesn't have to be Mid Souls roll die roll die mechanics for it to be good. The storyline is virtually unparalleled in videogame history. Stories don't stick with me like this one does. I mean who can forget the Bloody Baron quests and its haunting end? That also leads me to bring up how you can impact the ending of storylines, such as the Bloody Baron or even the main endings. It isn't some gimmick with no real choice. No, there's consequential choice that can give you an ending you are not satisfied with. In addition to the main quests, the side quests are also given as much love. If you have the DLCs, then it somehow is even better because those are the best DLCs ever released for a game. The world is gorgeous and the lore is immensely deep. I went ahead and read the comics after playing this and played the first two games. Skyrim perfects freedom, but Witcher perfects characterization. Geralt is more memorable to me than really any other video game character ever, apart from Mario or Link. He's becoming ubiquitous and popular like those two characters. They made a tv series for the franchise. That is a testament to Andrzej Sapkowski's writing from which the games are based on (Note: he hates videogames and did not write the games). Of course those outside things don't impact the gameplay but it helps reinforce my point that Geralt and his friends are lovable characters, especially here in this game.

The music is phenomenal. The graphics and world design are stunning even today. The game has Gwent that is so encapsulating, you could just spend a whole day playing that. Games often toss this type of stuff in, but it is never worth playing. The potion brewing is solid and monster hunting is impeccable. The monster designs are impeccable too. Again, the combat is solid and can allow for varied approaches in enemies.

Overall, this is flawless.

Haven't gotten around to this yet (own it but want to play 1 and 2 first), but I remember that when I first came across this site in 2019, this used to be in like the top 20 and I can't help but wonder if the backlash against the initial CP2077 release has anything to do with this game's decline in rankings. Or if it's just the swarm of new accounts by FromSoft fans still bitter about this beating Bloodborne for GoTY.

Still possible that it's because people are no longer enamored by the static nature of most AAA cinematic open world games but if that were the case whats RDR2 doing all the way in the first page.

I think people have grown to appreciate a different style of RPG like you said, theres a level of cinematic feel this lacks massively compared to a Last of Us or Red Dead. So if it gets out classed in cinematics then people are gonna focus and compare its other elements, combat and story.

Both of these are liked, but another recent change is people wanting more freedom and chaos than when this dropped. The appreciation for the open-endedness/player freedom of games like BG3 and Morrowind in modern game discussion explains why Witcher 3 might take a hit, as its pretty dry in RPG elements.

Story and open world it still is top class in but no longer uncompeted, with games like Elden Ring, Disco Elysium and Baldurs Gate 3 all getting a lot of love.

A lot of games have very few ratings but are weighted highly. There are dozens I would kick off T100 for this, but everything is subjective anyways.

Interesting, though perhaps unsurprising, if you sort the charts by As rated by... Located in... Poland, this is the highest rated game. It's score for Polish users is 4.49 based on 189 ratings.

I've heard the original Polish dub is very good so perhaps that is an influencing factor, given this is such a dialogue/story driven game.

It's not just the dub, which admittedly is superior in the Polish version. The writing in the that version is very much in vein of Sapkowski's stylized language, which IMO poorly translates into English.

Was trying to play whole trilogy with polish dub and in first game it is superior but not in this one. It has the same flaw as others dubs of this game - audio tracks are speeding or slowing down to keep in english track length. Also there are a lack of actors - Blood Baron was voiced by same man as some mere questgivers.

Ratings here don’t matter but what is disappointing to me is how the discourse surrounding this game has been poisoned beyond repair over the past couple of years. First it got circlejerked to death, then it got counter-circlejerked to death, and at this point all you ever see is the same recycled talking points that I won’t bother mentioning. It’s nauseating how many times I’ve had to read people say the exact same things about this game over and over again. Such a great game deserves a more constructive discussion about both its strengths and its weaknesses.

As someone from Poland, there's way too many obnoxious fanboys of this game there who consider it like a second coming of Christ. It's great but not that great.

Yeah, it definitely has it's problems. The combat is shallow and clunky and Geralt's movement is absolutely terrible.

I actually think that the combat is OK. It's the animations. I friggin swear, even though you use light/heavy attack HE DOES A DIFFERENT ANIMATIONS. I DON'T GET IT, SOMETIMES HE DOES LIKE A PIRUETTE WITH LIGHT ATTACK, SOMETIMES HE DOES NOT. I HAVE 200 HOURS ON THIS THING AND I STILL DON'T GET IT!! Phew... I just had to vent.

Or like after a dodge, sometimes he does this instant forward sword thrust but that happens like 1 out od 100 times. Is it distance based? CD Project pls explain.
