I had big expectations for this game – firstly because it is a continuation of Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings which was, in my opinion, a great game and secondly, because it was critically acclaimed, it earned many awards and many people think that it was GOTY of 2015. Now I'm thinking that maybe my expectations were a little unrealistic, because, although I like Witcher 3 very much, I'm also a little disappointed by it.
But let's start with strengths of this game, especially that there are plenty of them. I love side-quests, they are good-written, interesting and there are so many of them. Even the simplest one can make you feel strong emotions (for example Little Red - short, and simple quest, but I still remember it nonetheless), really good writing. Another think I like very much about Witcher 3 is its open world. It feels real, people living in it have their own lives and they are doing something, not just waiting for Geralt to talk to them. What I also like it's that in the beginning of the game, you can be in real danger if you decide to wander, because it's possible that you will meet monsters too powerful for you. It's great, because it makes world more immersive, more real. I also love visuals, even three years after release the game is still looking great. You could argue that every village in Velen looks the same, but look at Skellige, look at Novigrad! Impressive.
Now it's time to say few words about things I don't like about Witcher 3. Unfortunately I'm rather disappointed by the main story. It's not all bad, but the end is unsatisfying. After finding Ciri story loses its pace, becomes chaotic, feels like it's been done in the rush.. And main antagonist is plain and boring, he is almost just a generic bad dude (this is the guy to whom Ciri was attracted in the books ?). Final fight is also disappointing. I have one more complain - if you are doing side quests, after some time, you will be so powerful, that nothing in the main story will cause you trouble. It's not a good game balance.
Witcher 3 is a very good game. It is not as good as I though it would be, but it still took more than one hundred hours of my live and I have no regrets. I recommend playing this game, even if, storywise Witcher 2 was better, in my opinion, at least.

Haven't gotten around to this yet (own it but want to play 1 and 2 first), but I remember that when I first came across this site in 2019, this used to be in like the top 20 and I can't help but wonder if the backlash against the initial CP2077 release has anything to do with this game's decline in rankings. Or if it's just the swarm of new accounts by FromSoft fans still bitter about this beating Bloodborne for GoTY.
Still possible that it's because people are no longer enamored by the static nature of most AAA cinematic open world games but if that were the case whats RDR2 doing all the way in the first page.
I think people have grown to appreciate a different style of RPG like you said, theres a level of cinematic feel this lacks massively compared to a Last of Us or Red Dead. So if it gets out classed in cinematics then people are gonna focus and compare its other elements, combat and story.
Both of these are liked, but another recent change is people wanting more freedom and chaos than when this dropped. The appreciation for the open-endedness/player freedom of games like BG3 and Morrowind in modern game discussion explains why Witcher 3 might take a hit, as its pretty dry in RPG elements.
Story and open world it still is top class in but no longer uncompeted, with games like Elden Ring, Disco Elysium and Baldurs Gate 3 all getting a lot of love.
Interesting, though perhaps unsurprising, if you sort the charts by As rated by... Located in... Poland, this is the highest rated game. It's score for Polish users is 4.49 based on 189 ratings.
I've heard the original Polish dub is very good so perhaps that is an influencing factor, given this is such a dialogue/story driven game.
It's not just the dub, which admittedly is superior in the Polish version. The writing in the that version is very much in vein of Sapkowski's stylized language, which IMO poorly translates into English.
Was trying to play whole trilogy with polish dub and in first game it is superior but not in this one. It has the same flaw as others dubs of this game - audio tracks are speeding or slowing down to keep in english track length. Also there are a lack of actors - Blood Baron was voiced by same man as some mere questgivers.
As someone from Poland, there's way too many obnoxious fanboys of this game there who consider it like a second coming of Christ. It's great but not that great.
I actually think that the combat is OK. It's the animations. I friggin swear, even though you use light/heavy attack HE DOES A DIFFERENT ANIMATIONS. I DON'T GET IT, SOMETIMES HE DOES LIKE A PIRUETTE WITH LIGHT ATTACK, SOMETIMES HE DOES NOT. I HAVE 200 HOURS ON THIS THING AND I STILL DON'T GET IT!! Phew... I just had to vent.
Or like after a dodge, sometimes he does this instant forward sword thrust but that happens like 1 out od 100 times. Is it distance based? CD Project pls explain.
