Four years after a deadly virus swept across the world, the remains of humanity have slowly begun to rebuild and form relatively safe societies in the wasteland that was once their home. Among the survivors who still wander in search of salvation is former baseballer Javier Garcia and his family, who, on a routine stop-off to restock their van's gas, are attacked by a group of bandits. Separated and taken hostage by them, Javier is saved by a teenage girl named Clementine, who offers to help him regroup with his family and lead them to a safer community in exchange for their van. However, the group soon find themselves dealing with far more than they bargained for when they are caught up in a war between factions, and the overthrowing of a brewing dictatorship in Richmond.

Brainless
Season 3 takes away the focus from Clementine for a new character, and all his family trouble and baggage. The game is constantly making the player choose between family by blood or family by ties, its a type of choice that is pretty much present in all of the 5 episodes. The new cast isnt nearly as likeable as Clementine, but I will give the writers credit to the redemption arc of a very flawed main character. What I cant excuse is the proper dialogue, which is often awkward and at others just badly written.

The game also has a lot of technical issues. It looks terrible, and there is no way to justifies 15 fps zombies in a game that already looks 1 whole generation behind. This combined with the last episode really feels like this was very rushed out the door.

Easily the worst of the series I have played so far.

This "New Frontier" storyline doesn't add anything to Clementine's story, but I liked the new characters nevertheless. As reaching the same emotional impact of the first season would be nearly impossible, this time we have a whole new setting with a relatively action-packed adventure kind of approach. The writing is a little too naive at times, but at least it felt like our choices mattered for once. It sucks that the second season's ending gets undone though. The gameplay is similar to previous chapters, but we do not have as many useless interactive sections as before.

Title
Telltale’s The Walking Dead is based on Robert Kirkman's award-winning zombie apocalypse comic series (which also has a TV show). Developer Telltale Games specialise in episodic adventure games.

Due to the emphasis on story, those looking for a challenging game should avoid it because they won't find it here. You need to view the software as an interactive story rather than a game to fully enjoy it. A New Frontier is Season 3 of the Clementine story.

You can either choose a Season 2 save file to import, or answer questions to set what happened in the past. This changes what happens in some of Clementine’s flashback sequences.

Clementine is now a teenager with more attitude. She has raised baby AJ so has some parenting skills, and is very protective and is cautious of who she trusts.

Clementine isn’t the main character although she is a fairly prominent character. Instead, you play as Javi who is surviving with his brother’s kids; Gabe and Marianna, and his brother’s wife Kate. You are introduced to the family with a flashback that seems to be set before the outbreak. Javi rushes back to their family home to be there for his dying father but gets there too late. His brother David is a belligerent character and gives Javi a lot of abuse. Their Dad reanimates as a zombie and Javi staves his Dad’s head in with no reaction from the family. It’s a bit strange if you’d never encountered a zombie before.

I don’t normally like discussing the story in these games since that is a clear spoiler. I’ll try and keep it vague as I can, but I think in this installment, there’s some parts that I really didn’t like, and obviously it seems to get off to a bad start.

I’ve read negative player reviews for the first 2 Seasons where they say characters did dumb actions and didn’t act in a rational way, but I disagreed - those games were really well written. This game has many jarring events that I was shaking my head at.

In the present day, the family is scavenging for fuel for their van, but they accidentally take it from a group that is later revealed to be the New Frontier which initiates a conflict. Soon, there is a gun fight that starts when Marianna is hit, then Kate runs into the line of fire and gets hit, so then Gabe also runs into the line of fire. After you begin to escape, Clementine decides she is going to take them on single-handedly. A nearby town takes you in, but you bring the New Frontier to overrun the town. Even though the leader has lost everything, the leader and his close friends are rather friendly towards you. Soon there is another conflict where he loses more because of your actions, but he quickly moves on even if you admit what happened. Towards the end of the game, someone brings this moment up again, and he completely flips out at you and says he never wants to see you again, but soon u-turns and acts as if you are best friends. Additionally, despite the New Frontier being the biggest threat to Javi, he walks right up to their camp begging them for help.

Aside from these moments, the story and character development is similar to the previous seasons. So often you end up feeling sympathetic to people you initially perceived to be bad. People are doing what they can to survive and have to make hard choices.

There’s quite a few choices in the game but it's mainly “you're damned if you do, damned if you don't”. The choices are often just an illusion of choice. If the choices did make an impact on the game, the entire story would be different which isn't really feasible for developers to achieve. However, after doing a bit of research, I was surprised that Conrad can die in episode 2, or survive until the end. At the end of the game you are given a summary of how your decisions affect people’s perception of you. Maybe there are more differences in the story than I thought, but I would probably have to replay the game to see just how much this changes.

There’s usually a couple of flashbacks in each episode, one with Javi and one with Clementine. I felt some of these would have been better placed a bit earlier in the story. When you did have choices in the flashbacks, I felt my choices were influenced by how I know the characters in the present timeline.

Along the course of the game, there are places where you must find an item or learn something about your surroundings in order for the game to progress. The camera is still slightly too zoomed in, the walking feels slow and clunky, and some of the areas feel pointless as all you do is go to the few interactive objects to progress. There’s not many of these sections, but I felt it would be better if they were more frequent and more elaborate.

The game looks like it is using the updated engine from the spinoff Michonne game. So it features better graphics, better lighting, and new UI.

You can control Javi using the WASD keys, and mouse click to make your selection. I’d imagine it would be also compatible with a controller, using the control stick to move and face buttons for interaction.

The conversations usually have limited time to respond, which partially helps the conversation to have a more realistic flow, but also forces you to make a quick decision under pressure. Saying nothing at all can also be an option. This time, I felt the dialogue prompts didn’t quite match what the character said. Some of them had the complete opposite tone to how I felt they played out which is absolutely infuriating when you are trying to roleplay as a character. There were even a few key decisions which I’d misinterpreted.

Quick-time action sequences are used to deal with zombie attacks which can be quite violent. Here you will hammer the Q key, and sometimes press E to finalise the action. If you die, you are brought back to the last check-point which is saved at regular, logical intervals. It’s quite hard to die because the timing window seems very generous, and it seemed to ignore me when I pressed the wrong key.

Another reason why the game doesn’t seem as interesting is that the entire season is mainly set in one town. Only in the first couple of episodes do you see a few different locales.

In Season Two, part of the story was about a group run by an oppressive leader. This season is partly treading the same ground, but a slightly different take on it. It’s a larger group that has expanded to a city, run by a few government leaders with strict rules.

The game is split over 5 episodes and it lasts about 7 hours which is a bit short; a couple of hours shorter than the previous season.

The first two Seasons are highly recommended, and I think it is fine to leave the story at that point because it concludes the story of the original survivors. Obviously Clementine is still going but it reached a satisfying conclusion.

I had mixed feelings about this game. There were moments where it felt as good as the previous seasons, but then it had moments that seemed quite jarring. I’d probably only recommend it if the next season is satisfying and ties in well with this one.

Title
I like many games made by Telltale, I think that the first Walking Dead game was a masterpiece, which established a new game genre (something similar to visual novel, but with much more gameplay), it was a unforgettable experience. The sequel wasn't that good, but was still great (and there was also amazing A Wolf Among Us, the best game made by Telltale). A New Frontier is nowhere near that level. It's almost a complete failure.

Why first Walking Dead was such a great game? Because it was telling a compelling story, had a very interesting protagonist and it introduced player to many great characters. Unfortunately I can't tell any of these things about New Frontier. Don't get me wrong, Javier Garcia is not a bad character and has quite an interesting backstory, but he's nowhere near Lee level, although he is definitely the best part of this game. Because besides him and Clementine there is no good written character in this story.

I'm wondering if maybe I'm exaggerating, but, no, I don't think so. Other major characters are either totally stupid (Kate) or uninteresting and annoying (Gabe) and generally badly written. So, maybe story itself is better? Unfortunately that's not the case. It's all over the place, it's inconsistent and it's repetitive. Every episode begin with a retrospection showing Garcia's family life before zombie's outbreak and it's not good idea, because of that in first episodes player knows almost nothing about their background, so it's hard to care about them, that's why some moments who were supposed to be touching didn't work on me. Also villains. They are really stereotypical and badly written. Really, it's hard to even hate them. And character development...well it's almost non-existent, characters are staying the same through the course of the story.

Is everything about this game bad? Well, almost everything, I would say voice acting is pretty good, not stellar, but actors have done pretty good job. Definitely better than the screenwriters (not that is hard to do better than them). Besides there was one or two moving moments, there were in no way close to Lee's death in TWD1 regarding emotional impact, but at least I felt something when they happened.

This is the worst game of the series and the worst game by Telltale that I've played. Shame. I hope that they'll end Clementine story with much better game, she deserves it.

Title
A New Frontier is odd in a sense that it sort of is like Walking Dead Season 3 but at the same time not really. New Frontier focuses on entirely new characters and Clementine is mostly in the background as a side character. There are going to be some spoilers so I advise anyone reading this will play the game for themselves first before reading unless you don't care.

New Frontier focuses on a family (a man and his brother's wife and her 2 kids) and the game is essentially him trying to survive while making allies and enemies. Along the way shit goes bad when he runs into a group of armed men who end up separating him from his wife only for Clementine to save him and they team up and make allies with another camp and then join up with another camp which is where the meat of the game takes place. Its a very character driven game, and quite honestly, I actually found the characters in this to be a bit more likable than some of the other games. You didn't have anyone quite as annoying as Jane or Sarah, and most of the characters in this game work. The game actually dives into the back stories of the characters, and although it is basic, it does add depth, something characters lacked in the previous games. Sure there were too many characters in the past games and it would have been too hard to give them all flashbacks or flesh them out, but imagine if Lee had gotten flashbacks of his past in the first Season, it would have further cemented Lee's character and added more complexion.

Of course like all Walking Dead games there gets to a point where shit goes bad, your niece gets killed and your brother's wife ends up getting shot so you end up going to the camp for help that supposedly consists of members that attacked and killed your niece, and it happens the camp has your brother as one of its leaders. The rest of the game is essentially coming to terms and bonding with your brother, trying to either get his wife to trust him better or get her to leave him for you, and helping toughen your awkward nephew up. Clementine mostly just stays around and we get a few flashbacks which essentially just reveal what happened to AJ and how she got involved.

What I liked about this season most is the character interactions, they feel a bit more natural. Your brother David feels like a complex character, the family dynamic adds a different element, and I felt the pacing was decent for the first 4 episodes.

However there are big problems with this too and reasons I feel this is weaker than the first 2 seasons. The first thing is episode 5 is just a big mess. You have a giant conclusion where everything needs to be resolved, the tension with your brother, the town you're in being attacked by walkers, the town's corrupt leader getting away, and lots of unsolved characters arcs. The episode spends the first half just sort of dicking around with not much happening, then the second half just rushed everything. David, while having some anger problems, ends up being overly villanized and the game I feel tries to paint him as a bad guy even though he clearly isn't a monster and cares for his family, but the game just tries so hard to pull you in the direction of hating him and having his family turn on him and most choices you make don't improve that. The other thing is the ending is just terrible, I went for the one where I got with the brother's wife, and essentially you get a choice to either go after the brother or help your wife defend the settlement. My choice ended up with the brother crashing the car he tried to escape in and your nephew getting bitten and having to commit suicide. Then a character you ended up meeting 3 episodes ago appears out of nowhere to help you liberate the town from the walkers. Then after all that you end up meeting up with your new girlfriend and she acts very casual like nothing really happened and basically says she wants to start a new family, then Clementine says goodbye and goes to get AJ. That's it, that's the whole ending, no other characters get closure, nothing else really happens. At least in Season 2 there was some closure, but this it felt like a huge anti-climax.

On top of that the characters in this also make some really stupid decisions that almost felt on par with the first 2 seasons. David at the end of episode 4 starts a huge gunfight which then escalates and causes his wife to crash the vehicle into the wall unleashing Walkers, it almost mimics the stupidity of Season 2 when Kenny started a gunfight with the Russians. It just made me dislike some of the characters in this, and the only real characters I liked were the main family and Clementine. Did I also mention Clementine acts a bit out of character in this. I know she's been surviving on her own and probably was hardened, but she just kind of acts cold and like a bit of a hard ass in this. It just feels like her personality shifted way too dramatic from the previous 2 seasons.

Of course like all Telltale games you have choices too, and the choices in this did feel a bit more important than previous game. Sure many of the characters you can save in this do end up dying eventually, but it felt a lot less sudden than previous games. The game did have multiple choices, like do you want to romance the brother's wife, do you want to save his wife or him, do you want to harden your nephew or treat him with compassion. But still the game does mostly force you down a path and there are really only 2 major endings, but I do appreciate the game did have major branching paths unlike the previous 2 seasons.

So overall, New Frontier isn't bad, it had likable enough characters, decent development, and an alright plot. But a lot of what it builds up dies in a horrible rushed final episode and a very unsatisfying conclusion, and it sort of just kills of characters randomly instead of allowing a way to save everyone in your family. Not to mention the game does end up falling into silly cliches, but overall its not terrible. I just hope when Walking Dead continues it goes back to Clementine as the major focus because this season just felt mostly like filler and none of the events in this really didn't have a major impact on her, it basically just was her quest to find out where AJ was, and that's all Clementine gained. I just feel if Telltale keeps milking these game series, we'll eventually see a point where the story becomes less interesting and feels more like every other TV show that has been running for an infinite amount of seasons and refuses to end despite its best years being long behind it.
