Revenge of Shonobi is such a cool game. I mean you have The Terminator and Spider-Man and Batman. You have amazing music and ninjas on trains and skyscrapers. You’ve got sweet power ups and clever design. It’s my favorite game of 1989, but it’s certainly not perfect. The double jump was driving me crazy, the difficulty was annoying at times and it’s a bit padded. Still the aesthetics and the gameplay are super fun and it’s been a long debate between this and number 3 as the best Shinobi around.

Sonic the Hedgehog didn't arrive on Genesis until two years after launch, but this sequel to the classic, brutal Shinobi [忍] arcade game gave the system's debut year something to remember it by.

The iconic music, bossess that copy comicbook and film characters (Batman, Godzilla), and hard-as-hell stages keep me coming back. The sequel improves on the format in every way, but you should start here.
