The Movies is a business management simulation game with lampooning satire where the player runs a Hollywood movie studio from its golden age and onward. While building and keeping the studio float and managing your stars are the main features, the main selling point is for the player is writing and editing in-game films and export outside the game.

Oo, I recall this game being a great deal of fun (especially for someone who enjoys studio era Hollywood): a simulation of a film studio which you create from scratch, building the lot, developing the stars and the crew in order to make better films that generate more prestige and money...the film editor is included, so you can piece together the actual films.

It did get a bit repetitive, and trying to keep everything in check would eventually become quite a hassle once you have several films being shot at the same time. And I probably didn't quite get everything (I was playing the game in German, despite having somewhat shaky knowledge of the language) but it would be nice to give this a new go at some point (I don't think I have discs around anymore though, and at the moment of writing it seems it is not available in Steam or GOG...)

Title
The business management side of things is more than adequate, getting you involved into the wheeling and dealing that goes into film creation, and managing actors, their schedules, injuries, egos and so on is delicious dumb fun for any movie buff with cursory knowledge of the business. The movie creation suite isn't too bad considering how reliant on stock footage it is, but it's hardly a substitute for a 3D modelling program of your own.

    The problem really is the premise sounds like it could be so much more while most of the gameplay feels like a standard time management/base building game.

    The only movie I ever made in this game was a completely custom production called "The Latino Lord," which was essentially my take on a Latin "The Godfather." Even with money cheats, it single-handedly bankrupted my studio because it was, based on in-game hours, a 12-hour film that audiences detested.

    I remember laughing so hard making these non-sensical dumbass movies that made Freddy Got Fingered look like Citizen Kane. God this game was underrated.
