An interesting follow-up with less soul, but more options and epicness!
Even if I have played the first game more, I love this second installment in the franchise. There are three more factions (Elves, Dwarves and Goblins, not playable in TBFME 1), more heroes than in the first game (some of them invented for the game or by the Peter Jackson movies), the possibility to freely organize your military base, and an overall increase of things to do and discover. You just feel a huge sense of scale when you play at full army capacity.
There are two solo campaigns, one for Good, one for Evil, and my understanding is that it loosely follows the story of Tolkien's books (I couldn't say, I've only read LOTR and Bilbo so far). These campaigns are fun, though they are quite short and the ending is nothing you haven't seen before.
In brief, this is a good strategy game, essential for LOTR fans and people that liked the first game, the only negative thing I could think of is the mid Witch-King expansion that doesn't bring anything enthralling on the table.
