I think this is one of those games that you need to have played as a kid to love.
Wind Waker looks great despite its age and is very charming, but it's pretty tedious to play. It feels like every action you do needs some button combination or show a cutscene first. The grappling hook shows a cutscene every time. Changing the wind direction, which you need to do constantly in order to sail different directions, requires playing a song and watching a cutscene, which takes 15 seconds in total, every time.
The open world is quite big, but most of it is completely empty and featureless sea. There is no real reason to explore freely before approaching the end of the game, as most islands need specific items to complete. Also, the game is extremely easy and offers basically no challenge.

It's really funny cause as a kid I was super imaginative and liked to always make up characters in games in my head, or imagine entire new levels, or assign my own headcanon lore to random NPCs in towns with no actually back story.
I did this a looooooot for Wind Waker in particular. But now as an adult I look back and understand the reason why I liked doing this with Wind Waker so much was because the acual game was pretty devoid of content compared to the other Zeldas, outside of the novelty of exploration itself.
No game uses the horizon and draw distance better than this. The flatness of the ocean makes it a joy to watch a speck in the distance grow larger and larger and become a whole island. It's also what makes noticing those jumping fishes so easy and elegant.
I hope sometime soon people will be able to create their own custom stories with new enemies, dungeons, bosses etc like some are doing with the n64 Zelda's. As much as I love this game it is infamously lacking in dungeons and just stuff to do in the great sea, and I particularly love this engine and the overall gamefeel of WW so it would be cool to see fans utilise that
probably my favorite storyline of any zelda game. i think this game would have gone over better at launch if it had an adult link and a darker storyline. the toon look is amazing and i wish they had done more games with it. playing the song every time you want to change the wind direction is so tedious though
I have some qualms about the story in general, (mostly Tetra's personality disappearing after finding out she's Zelda), but this game has my favorite Ganondorf for sure. His monologues are incredible. I genuinely understood his pain and why he chose to do what he did
