The Wind Waker is most distinguished by its gorgeous graphics and sea-based setting. It seems like major departure for the series, but it is more true to open exploration of the NES games. The world really comes to life and feels more fully-realized than any Zelda before or since. The Wind Waker also has the most fun combat, with Link capable of nifty dodges and counter-attacks. Problem is, the enemies do very little damage, taking off only a mere quarter-heart per hit, so these advanced techniques are wasted. The lack of damage also means that there is less urgency to obtain heart pieces to increase Link's maximum health. And with the "treasure" of this game being the heart pieces, the lack of damage means that treasure-finding is less of an incentive to explore the vast seas. The potential of the seas is also wasted by the fact that game is lacking in content and ends too quickly. Ultimately, by the end, The Wind Waker doesn't feel as epic as it should be. I think with more challenging combat and (two) more dungeons, the game would've been the best game in the series easily, It is still a great game, maybe it is still the best in the series, but I can't help but think of what could've been.

It's really funny cause as a kid I was super imaginative and liked to always make up characters in games in my head, or imagine entire new levels, or assign my own headcanon lore to random NPCs in towns with no actually back story.
I did this a looooooot for Wind Waker in particular. But now as an adult I look back and understand the reason why I liked doing this with Wind Waker so much was because the acual game was pretty devoid of content compared to the other Zeldas, outside of the novelty of exploration itself.
No game uses the horizon and draw distance better than this. The flatness of the ocean makes it a joy to watch a speck in the distance grow larger and larger and become a whole island. It's also what makes noticing those jumping fishes so easy and elegant.
I hope sometime soon people will be able to create their own custom stories with new enemies, dungeons, bosses etc like some are doing with the n64 Zelda's. As much as I love this game it is infamously lacking in dungeons and just stuff to do in the great sea, and I particularly love this engine and the overall gamefeel of WW so it would be cool to see fans utilise that
probably my favorite storyline of any zelda game. i think this game would have gone over better at launch if it had an adult link and a darker storyline. the toon look is amazing and i wish they had done more games with it. playing the song every time you want to change the wind direction is so tedious though
I have some qualms about the story in general, (mostly Tetra's personality disappearing after finding out she's Zelda), but this game has my favorite Ganondorf for sure. His monologues are incredible. I genuinely understood his pain and why he chose to do what he did
