GOTY
God DAMNNNN this shit is fun.

An improved weapon system, way more shit to do, a more engaging story, and the same if not more care for detail in the map/level design compared to botw is truly an accomplishment. Is almost unbelievable that this game makes its predecessor feel like a beta test, taking all the old systems, mixing them with new ideas, and cranking everything up to 11, which would have seemed inconceivable just a few months ago. Botw is one of my favorite games of all time, but I have to admit that this is an improved game in nearly every measurable way, while not feeling like it's rereading the same beats. I wish dearly that this game and the devs who made it were given an opportunity to create on hardware that was up to par with modern standards, and it is honestly impressive what they were able to do considering the physical limitations of the Switch (I'm looking at you Pokemon Scarlet/Violet).

All things considered, this is one of the most joyus experiences you can have in gaming, and I urge anyone with a switch or pc to give it a try.

They took a 9/10 game and stapled a bunch of garbage to it. It's just like playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild [ゼルダの伝説 ブレス オブ ザ ワイルド] again, except now you have to deal with garbage new enemy types and an absolutely dreadful item fusing system. Yes, let's make a game about manipulating objects in a 3D space and then only allow you to move those objects in two dimensions. You can adjust the pitch and yaw, but you can't roll an object? Ridiculous.
What's more, most of the time, you get better results not building a contraption. It's legitimately quicker to just move an object manually rather than to build a car to transport it.
Sometimes, the old BOTW charm seeps through, like with the newspaper quests or exploring the initial sky island. Shame about all the new mechanics.

its a great sequel!
i love this game. the dungeons, bosses, etc etc. the graphics are beautiful and the puzzles are really fun!!
but it's not that clear what happened between The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild [ゼルダの伝説 ブレス オブ ザ ワイルド] and Tears of The Kingdom. we don't even know how many years it's been between the two games. and they just brush off most of the champions too. the shiekah(idk if i spelled that right) technology is basically gone and it's not clear what happened to it. its still a very good game! very fun.
i love the story too! i dunno if i can say anything about spoilers so i won't. :3 but it was really good and i loved all the characters!!

The Legend of Gimmicks
I was one of the few players who did not have much of an issue with the map being reused from Breath of the Wold. Breath of the Wild's job was to deliver a beautiful world, and Tears of the Kingdom's job was to fill it. The way the developers went about filling this game was repetitive koroks and sign builders, fetch quests, escort missions, and hours of grinding to collect rare materials to upgrade armour sets that were already collected in BOTW, all the while forcing the player to use a buggy and unpolished building mechanic at every opportunity. The Ultrahajlnd ability, while a neat concept that enriches exploration and problem solving, is used in such abundance in the game that it has effectively engulfed the experience. The original joy from being able to build whatever contraption I wanted was almost instantly sucked away from me because I was forced to build contraptions that conformed to the vast majority of puzzles in the game. Many of the shrines involved an Ultrahand puzzle. All of the dungeons were filled to the brim with Ultrahand puzzles. Most of the sky islands I explored involved a challenge of transporting a stone to a shrine pedestal, which entailed building a machine to fly the stone with the very limited zonai devices I had. It seems the developers spent so much time creating this mechanic that they needed to inundate every single puzzle in the game with it to make it worth while. The runes in BOTW were so limited in comparison that it forced the player to think creatively about how to solve a puzzle with their limited toolset. Here the player basically has god mode and must fiddle with sticking and unsticking parts to solve puzzles. It becomes tedious and seriously puts a damper on a game that otherwise is a mostky enjoyable experience. Overall I enjoyed this game far less than BOTW.

Midtendo...
TL,DR: TOTK makes me scared for the future of the Zelda series, and I hope Nintendo figures out what they want out of Zelda games going forward, because this one feels very confused.

This game isn't awful. I had a lot of fun in certain parts, mostly in the first few hours, or when interacting with NPCs in side quests. The whole time I was playing I couldn't tell if I was enjoying myself. Yes, the game made me want to play more, but it was mostly out of curiosity than any love for the game's mechanics. The obvious selling point of this game is that it is Breath of the Wild but you can skydive, which never got old and was always visually stunning. If you want a pretty game to play faded, this checks that box. Thing is.... the rest of the game is just so aggressively mid and poorly designed. Ultrahand is the worst offender. It makes nearly every puzzle in this game slow and clunky. I'm shocked at how bad the controls are for moving objects around in 3D space, especially when there's a whole gyroscope and accelerometer built into the expensive ass JoyCons!!! The shrines in Breath of the Wild worked because they hit that classic Zelda puzzle itch, but you could solve them in a few minutes and get right back to the main gameplay loop. Here, almost every puzzle makes use of Ultrahand in some way. Yes, there are exceptions, but the other abilities are mainly used for combat and exploration, and Recall seems like it was implemented only for fixing Ultrahand mistakes💀. I found myself quitting shrines all the time, which was surprising as I loved them in BOTW so much I finished all 120 of them. I think this game is an example of why DLC are DLC and games are games. I LOVED the Champion's Ballad DLC in BOTW; it added new shrines, new gameplay, and new story, but if it was released as its own game I would probably hate it. There wasn't enough new content in the DLC to justify it being its own game, and if it had been turned into its own game, that content would probably have to have been stretched thin and padded out. That's what happened here; the developers of Tear's of the Kingdom say it started out as BOTW DLC, and it's veeery obvious. Even before you play a second of TOTK, it's obvious that it lacks its own identity. It has a bunch of new mechanics - sky islands, machines, a sexy bird man (Rauru), but none of that is fleshed out enough to do any of it well. It definitely doesn't do sky islands well. If they had some cool stuff to find up there, it would have been amazing! It would have felt like it's own secret area. Instead, the sky is mostly filled with random shit, and there's literally nothing interesting to discover. The machines are cool until you realize that they despawn as soon as you walk away from them, and some despawn while you're using them, which both defeats the whole point of having machines and makes you spend more time rebuilding them with Ultrahand (which made me want to end my life). Yes, despawning isn't that big of a deal on paper, but you don't really have a lot of options on what to build - it doesn't approach the complexity of something like Ratchet and Clank: Nuts and Bolts. So you're stuck making the same basic cars or planes, which you would ideally want to have with you at all times, as they are vehicles, but they DON'T. So you end up building the same vehicles over and over again. They have a way to build things faster, but it requires you having the exact same parts as the blueprint, which defeats the whole point of an open ended game like this. And the story is laughably bad, and Rauru doesn't get to do anything sexy. So the game doesn't do any of its new things well. Okay, whatever, fine, but this is a sequel to BREATH OF THE WILD. That game did one thing SO WELL - exploring the beautiful ruined wilderness of the world around you. It captured the feeling that I only get on a hike, that I get by living my life. It felt pure. That's stupid, but it's true. It was built from the ground up for that purpose, even going so far as to put it in the title of the game. Even the very bare-bones story of BOTW was built around this same purpose, making you explore the world to discover its history. Yes, TOTK still has that same engine and world with different content to discover, but it doesn't work the second time around. You lose out on the exploration of BOTW, as you've already explored all of Hyrule. And the content they put in there is not designed around the world of Hyrule, but designed purely to be *different* from BOTW. Everything has some kind of small change from the past game, which is good as you're paying $70 to play this, but it feels less like a new game and more like a reskin. I'm disappointed in the developers, as it feels very safe. This game has inspired a lot of Majora's Mask comparisons, as Majora's Mask used the same engine as its predecessor, but at least with that game the developers had the balls to leave the world of Hyrule and make an entirely different kind of game. Imagine what we could have gotten if the idea of time travel in this game was expanded and we actually were able to go back in time to ancient Hyrule. TOTK is too afraid to get rid of the thing that made BOTW sell so many copies - its world of Hyrule. Instead of using the success of BOTW to sell a different, weirder game, they copped out and made BOTW 1.5. It's my understanding that the developers didn't want to just make BOTW in a different world, but I think this could have worked. It certainly worked in Genshin Impact, when you left Monstadt and discovered Liyue for the first time. Inevitably, the next Zelda game will have to incorporate the mechanics that BOTW introduced and put it into a new world, so why wait? I get that it would have been a riskier financial decision, but it just comes across like they didn't have the confidence to make the same leap forward that BOTW made, again. I'm gonna blame the pandemic for this one.

I really never understand what people find so mid about this game. For me this is a gold standard for gaming and freedom in video games.

"gold standard for freedom in video games"
Sincerely, I dont know how anyone could play an immersive sim or a western RPG from the last 20 years and come to this conclusion.

The freedom in ToTK is like if in Chess you could move any of pieces whenever and wherever you wanted. Sure you're free, but its not really good game design is it?

Eh, the movement options, vehicle building and emergent interactions reward creativity endlessly and make for 100+ hours of fun, if that’s your thing. Yes, Koroks, shrines, etc. are repetitive but you can take each one as an opportunity to try something entirely new. Limitless options do come at the cost of requiring the player to think more creatively out of thin air, as opposed to the game catalyzing creativity through restrictions. Lots of games do benefit from restrictions, but games like this ought to exist too. They appeal to a different thinking style that is equally valid. More fun for some, less fun for others.

I know it strikes a bad chord with a lot of folks because their beloved Zelda IP is almost unrecognizably different, and I can definitely sympathize with that.

God, imagine how amazing it would be if they made a four swords type game in this engine?

much better in some ways than BOTW but also worse in some ways. So far re-exploring the open world has been fun and fresh but not nearly as fun as exploring a completely new map would hypothetically have been, the depths doesn't quite scratch that itch either, since although it is chillingly daunting and absurdly cool, it doesn't fulfil all the functions of an open world map due to it being subsidiary to the main map in mechanics and purpose too.

the best experience i've had in this game so far would have to be falling into the depths for the first time very early on, I walked around in darkness for about half an hour before figuring out how to illuminate the environment, then with limited light resources I tried to travel to a lightroot I saw in the distance knowing it must be a waypoint - turns out between me and it was the Dueling Canyons Mine, and ensue the next few hours of slowly climbing endlessly high walls, walking around in darkness and evading gloom, getting disorientated by the multiple lightroots teasing me in the distance, then finally getting around to one after sneaking around a Lionel. Some people seem to miss Bagman so much they made their own "mid" reviews in dedication to the (bag) man.

I have at least 150 hours in this game by now. I have tons of stuff left to do but I'm not really finding much motivation to boot it up. Absence of hard mode and the overwhelming amount of bullshit loot are both tremendous mistakes. There are no encounters that require any thought past a certain point, and most chests/rewards are useless bullshit. It's a fantastic game but they really effed up in those two areas imo.

I really think the shrine puzzles in BOTW are more satisfying, although TOTK's "battle arena" shrines are an area of improvement. I like the versatility of Fuse but dislike the clunkiness of Ultrahand. Basically, for every upgrade to gameplay there's also a downgrade.
