I remember playing this as a kid I was kinda bummed there were only 4 dungeons. That's where my mind was at the time -- bigger is better. But MM stuck with me a lot more than the other Zelda games; it's world feels a lot more real and the story feels a lot more conceptual than the typical; Link-got-sword-save-world-and-maybe-smooch-lady plotline. The re-use of assets from OOT really adds to the uncanny mood of the whole thing. Just about everything in the game seems like it's designed to build a mood, more-so than constantly serving gamer expectations. I think that design philosophy paid off, particularly since it wasn't likely the design team was going to be able to top OOT in any conventional way.

Since I first played it near the beginning of high school, Majora's Mask has been a very conflicting game for me. There are two opposing images of the game in my mind that make it tough for me to decide just how I feel about it. From a creative and an aesthetic standpoint, this is probably the finest Zelda game. It's also the most esoteric, featuring an uncommon and often confusing gameplay style. Games that play like Majora's Mask are rare, and for it to be a mainline title in one of the most popular video game franchises ever is pretty ambitious on Nintendo's part. The game does a lot of things right; it has an unforgettable atmosphere, a lot of unique gameplay ideas, tons of side content and a sizable world to explore. Even more so than those elements, MM excels in the narrative and thematic arenas. Without a doubt, this is one of the darkest entries in the series, and possibly the most emotional one. The game is incredibly tense, its atmosphere is oppressive, and a lot of the themes are terribly sad. It's odd to see such a surreal and dark presentation in a Zelda game, but that's just what makes Majora's Mask a singular experience.
Unfortunately, for everything that the game gets right, a few of its elements are more disappointing. The visuals, which were almost entirely taken right from Ocarina, can tend to feel a bit stale - making this game feel at times like a total conversion mod. This is somewhat forgivable, but it still undeniably embues a sense of deja vu, which I mostly found underwhelming. In some cases, this odd feeling of deja vu actually works to the game's benefit: especially during moments like the sidequest at the ranch. Much more importantly though, Majora's Mask fails to provide as smooth and enjoyable an experience as Ocarina of Time. I wholly recognize that this is part of the game's themes - this is a stressful experience for Link's character and for the player. But for my tastes, too many times in Majora's Mask did I find myself confused on how to proceed, forced to fiddle around with wonky time travel mechanics, or stuck on a horrible boss fight. Don't get me wrong, Ocarina of Time is not without its faults, but playing it is a much more straightforward and pleasant experience. Not only was that game longer, but it was also much smoother, with less challenges or puzzles that felt unfair. If anything, I think I can chalk this up to Majora's Mask being that game's sequel. Naturally, it's harder, and many would argue that it has to be in order to fit with the game's more downtrodden and oppressive themes. Overall while Majora's Mask is definitely among my favorite games in the series, the fun factor compared to its predecessor is slightly lacking.

I couldn't stand the timer system nor the day/night's one. Very frustrating. I just hate to be rushed when it doesn't have to.

Other than weird itch.io or old flash games or obviously straight up horror games, this has to be the most surreal/weirdest "mainstream game" right?
Hard to say cuz there are a lot of weird games that most people know now that weren't really popular upon first release (Pathologic[Мор. Утопия], LSD etc)
