A new kind of detective game that allows you to think and investigate freely. Discover clues surrounding 12 strange and gruesome deaths and build your own theory. Pick your suspect, deduce the motive, unmask the awful truth.
This is the most fun I've had from a small indie game in a while!
The Case of the Golden Idol is a mystery crime-solving game along the same lines as Return of the Obra Dinn, though turned into a point-and-click. Each level has you - usually - solving a murder and solving some other mystery along with it. The individual levels are great, and progresses from being very simple at the start, to being more open and complex later. You follow the titular Golden Idol from place to place and you get to watch a set of recurring characters and see how they play into the larger plot. This starts forming an intriguing, mysterious and sinister story from level to level; much larger than you might suspect from the first couple of levels. The way the story unravels as you follow the trail of bodies throughout the Idol's journey is my favourite part. They also change things up later in the game which pleasantly surprised me and kept things fresh and interesting. Absolutely adore this little game, good head-scratching fun!

I liked the complexity of the later cases, and I liked the overarching mystery, figuring out how the cases all connect to one another through one story. But I didn't like how even though I had the story together in my head at the end, the fill-in-the-blanks of some of those later cases were still impenetrable. Feels like a decent trial run for something better.
It's weird reading these comments because I was a bit disappointed that the later cases weren't complex enough. The complexity peaked for me with the dinner party case which was the one I got stuck on for a while, and I found pretty much all the cases afterwards to be much simpler.
Same here I fcking loved the dinner party, but the last one was pretty cool too even if I would have liked it a bit harder

Great game and I really enjoyed. I feel like it’s a step up from Obra Dinn in that it felt less trial-and-error, though it still can become trial-and-error at times. Obra Dinn does feel like the more grand and impactful game though, maybe just because it’s in 3D.
Got this just because of the Obra Dinn comparisons and I’m definitely enjoying it so far. Not nearly as much as Obra Dinn but that’s a very high bar for me. We’ll see though, I think I’m still fairly early in.
Love the art style overall. But we defs need more games like this and Obra Dinn in general
The fill in the blanks mechanic is probably my least favourite aspect of the game, even if the way you figure a lot of them out is fairly satisfying. Ultimately makes it feel more like an intricate logic puzzle game than a detective experience overall.
Still really excellent, but Obra Dinn is still the GOAT for me in this style/genre.
