Tetris

Tetris is the purest intersection between art, play, and geometry. Even though games like Resident Evil 4, Mario 64 and We Love Katamari top my games list, Tetris is one of those unspoken things where it's almost moot to bring it up.

Hard to complain about this classic. The gameplay and music were nearly flawless at the time and it is still a very enjoyable game. Almost all of my gripes are minor. Being on Game Boy, it is black and white and old school pixelated. This game is often considered one of the best and most addictive games ever made and in my opinion, the best falling block game created with only The New Tetris on 64 coming close. The game is simple enough for anyone to pick it up. Tetris appears here in nearly its original form; no extra additions or new rules. There are two game settings, one where you try to get a set number on lines while building the largest score. Obviously Tetris's are worth the most. The other game mode is an open ended play. In both modes, you can select the speed at which the blocks fall. The faster they fall, the more point you get for completing lines. Three classic Tetris tunes accompany the game as well.

Tetris is the king of puzzle games and the Game Boy version sits atop all versions I have played. The Game Boy did allow two player gameplay here with the link cable. The result is one of the best two player games on the Game Boy. You can play against a friend, adding a portable, two-player version of Tetris unmatched by any other Tetris version of the time. This made road trips as a youngster much more bearable. This is probably the best game I have played on the Game Boy.
