Each player must create complete horizontal lines within their matrix by guiding falling blocks called "Tetriminos" in order to keep them from piling to the top, while facing off against 98 other players trying to do the same. Players can add "garbage" blocks to the bottom of each other's stacks by clearing large amounts of lines at once and by clearing lines in succession.
Tetris is gaming's ultimate ode to Antoine de Saint Exupéry's idea of perfection, and thus adding anything to it beyond a lick of paint runs a very significant risk of interfering with arguably the purest experience in the entire medium - so much credit must be given to this game for taking a step as significant as turning it into an online battle royale and making it work. It's an idea that looks insane on paper, but the competitive element is woven into the gameplay as naturally as you could realistically hope for, the presentation - the other players appearing in the background, part of your periphery vision, subtly increasing the tension - is perfect, and the Tetris format has always suited these kind of short, sharp bursts of play. It borrows a lot of inspiration from the competitive multiplayer in the Puyo Puyo[ぷよぷよ] franchise, sure, but that's no bad thing - and I mean, it's not as though Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine ever let me play against 98 people at once, right?
