Open-world sandboxes are not typically my thing, and I honestly expected this to be an exception with the 2D side-scrolling and cool aesthetic.
Unfortunately, it did not live up to that. It felt like more of the same to me, and actually came across to be even more of a slog than 3D open-world stuff. While the limitations of the 2D approach to this can, in theory, open up new worlds and possibilities, my time with the game did not bear any fruit to that. And who knows, maybe if I persisted harder, it would have! But it's such a chore to get through at first that, despite knowing what the possibilities were later on, I could not be convinced to keep pressing on. A shame, because the art style and aesthetic is the biggest single selling point for me, and I imagine for a lot of people it'll be enough of a hook.

I do sound like I dislike this a lot, but not really! It's only just below-average for me, and maybe if I got it for free, I could be convinced to keep playing and get something out of it.

i like this game, it has a lot to do and its amazing how much care re logic has put into this game
Graphics they are very pleasing, the detail on some of the bosses is incredible and the gore when an evil thingy is killed is very satisfying
Sound/music The soundtrack is a bop what can i say, each piece is fitting and one of my favorites is the mushroom biome theme for it has very funky noises i like. And the the sound design holds a lot of weight to it and feels satisfying.Like every crunch or cry from my enemies that i slaughter sound like they actually killed a man.
Game play Some call it 2d Minecraft i call them mentally unstable for this game has an almost addictive game play loop. This game is split into 2 parts, pre hardcore and hardcore mode.Pre hardcore is essentially just: getting the necessary accessories like hermies boots and cloud in a bottle, building homes for npcs, kill worm/brain, get cool picaxe, mine lava rock and make stuff from that, kill bone and loot dungeon, and then sacrifice a living human so you can fight a big lump of meat. So now in hardcore you go beat up alters, mine ore, kill metal bosses, kill plant, kill rock, kill a conspirecy theorist, kill 4 floating flesh lights and then kill cathulus brother.Pretty neat
Story There isn't one
The bad if i had to complain, it would be that a new player would be completely lost in what to do, there's only the guide but hes lame so the player must depend on external sources like the wiki which i think shouldn't be the case. Also after pre hard mode i felt like the momentum fell of by having to mine 3 ores but that's just a minor complaint.

I am not so enthusiastic about pure sandbox games: thus Terraria with its slightly bigger emphasis on exploration and adventure takes the concept to more interesting direction.

this game is awful singleplayer and worse than any other sandbox game multiplayer. grinding as the 'when all else fails' way of scaling sucks, i do not want to spend 2 hours figuring out im not cut out for a boss just to spend 2 hours in the snow for a slightly better yo-yo. but i understand why people like it. its addicting, like gambling. You could say this about the whole game really. seeing all the flashy 20 minute youtube videos outside the casino can suck you in when they dont remind you that its a 20 hour slog. The direct start and then start of hardmode are the worst. base movement is clumsy and awful and then at hardmode everything takes you to half health in one hit and you have to somehow beat one of three extremely tanky bosses to get gear good enough to actually be able to do the other two. master mode is utter bullshit, expert is not much better, but they lock actual interesting boss patterns behind these so fuck you. I'm still mad at my friends for making me play this and mad at myself for continuing
also wiki games are bad. end of story. just let the guide show you crafting trees and have the bestiary show drops without having to farm the enemy first. actually just make it so that stuff is readily available at crafting stations so the wiki middle man isnt needed at all
Hard not to agree with your criticisms even though I still think this is a great game. The game asks a lot of you and there's no guarantee that you will be rewarded for your time. All the variety in playstyles begs for repeat playthroughs, but it's such a grind-heavy game that replaying through certain sections can get extremely tiresome. After playing through 5-10 times, it feels like a balancing act between some of the most fun I've ever had playing video games and a boring, frustrating grind. It's why I don't plan to come back to it for a good while (watch my friends and I inevitably simp for the next big update).
And yeah, if you're not even having fun with the actual fun parts (which is understandable if your friends started you out in expert/master mode with no prior experience), I can understand hating this game. I have nothing but respect for Re-Logic, they really do try to listen to the fans, but I think some of the game's issues might run too deep for them to fix at this point. Terraria has become such a massive game and it's all built on that RNG philosophy. But who knows, they've surprised me before.
I found this basically unplayably awkward to control on console, I can see the appeal on PC but it's just such a pain to hit the block I'm wanting to hit with a controller.
After that though, insane game

if you put it like that, it becomes pretty easy to comprehend how this is the greatest game of all time
