Title
A bit of a damp squib, really; I'd imagine most people will be coming to this after playing Table Top Racing: World Tour following the exposure it got from being a PlayStation Plus giveaway, and I can't imagine too many of them won't be disappointed by it. It's perfectly functional, and certainly isn't a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but it lacks the personality and the snappy accessibility that makes its sequel so great, and somehow it feels smaller, not just in scale but in ambition. The control mechanism is a bit awkward, with everything pushed onto the joysticks and no option to change it to the much more common and comfortable shoulder button set-up, but even if you could switch that it wouldn't change the fact that the collision mechanics and acceleration both feel a little bit slack and timid, the cornering feels too mechanical, and the overall presentation somehow doesn't provide any real sense of speed. It's probably tempting to people who've never owned a Vita to blame that last point on the hardware, but there are plenty of other racers on this console that manage to do that just fine. It's those 'plenty of other racers' that are the problem here, really; despite a solid concept, Table Top Racing doesn't do enough to distinguish itself from them, or provide any particular selling point. Basically everything about this game is somewhere between solid and functional, but nothing really 'pops'. Luckily World Tour, a game that almost does nothing but pop, improved on every aspect of it.
