Great Soundtrack; poorly aged
best soundtrack out of every GB title at the time, but with clunky platforming and at times unfair design, this game pales in comparison to the other entries in the Mario 2D Platformer titles. The shoot-em-up levels were a nice change of pace though I wish Mario did that type of thing more often.

The soundtrack was easily the highlight of Super Mario Land, that otherwise collects an ugly jumble of warped enemy designs and revised mechanics. While the idea was perhaps to approach the formula from a different perspective (and therefore justify a series), the result was a minor work that juxtaposed an awkwardly thin, cramped platformer with a trivial sidescrolling shooter.

Title
Super Mario Land is awesome at showing what happens when you haven't yet established a formula to follow. So much of this just feels out there and downright surreal when looking at it from the context of a Mario game. The koopas turn into deadly bombs when they explode, the world design takes overt inspiration from real locations, ranging from ancient Egyptian tombs, feudal Japan, and even Easter Island, some worlds end with a scrolling shoot 'em up, the invincibility star plays the Can-Can upon picking it up, there's just a bunch of weirdness that goes on. When playing for what felt like the 10th time however, I started thinking beyond this surface level weirdness and realising how this is really something that only could have occurred in these formative years of the Mario franchise, before anything was 100% established. While it almost feels like a weird, 3rd party spin off at points, there's still this clear charm underneath it all, with some really great attention to effectively guiding the player through all of these challenges, it still has that abstract Mario spirit.

However even with this in mind, I find it hard to believe that such an off kilter game in such an omnipresent series as Mario would actually be made today, which makes it feel even more special. Even in the very final moments of the game, this still ends up throwing new things at you, to the point where the very last obstacle before the final boss is something you haven't seen before, and it's always hard to predict exactly what you'll need to deal with at any point in time. This is a big part of how these relatively simple level designs end up feeling so interesting, there's this perpetual sense of uncertainty within each stage that keeps the player on their toes and goes a long way to diversify the experience. This works especially well thanks to how short this game is, only having 4 worlds with 3 levels each, but making each of these longer and introducing many new things in each. It's also great that this game feels very generous with the extra lives, not only packing a plethora of pipe sub-areas with an insane amount of coins, but also allowing the player to gain up to 3 more at the end of each stage if they take on a little optional, usually difficult platforming section to reach a higher goal. These little optional challenges are cool and allow the game to have those moments of insane precision without feeling unfair, as the only cost is not getting the bonuses and still allowing you to get to the goal.

I feel like the combination of how short this game is and how generous it can be with giving you lives ends up making for an experience that is pretty manageable all around, with even a couple of game overs not really being too horrible due to the experience you've accrued allowing you to go through the game again, only this time with another 5 - 10 lives with you. Sure, the lives system as a whole, especially in this sort of context is still a flaw in itself, but this is one of the more forgiving games that use this particular style of it, and there was no point where it ended up feeling like a save state would be anything close to necessary. With this all said I do still feel like the game has some issues that hold it back from true greatness. The biggest is how Mario controls, as while it's largely playable, the physics feel very janky and make it difficult to move around with any sort of nuance, which as expected, makes some later parts feel way trickier than they should. I also feel like a bit more time could have gone into properly framing and dressing up elements of the level, as a lot of times had them feeling closer to "standard game platform" and the like, rather than something that actually had a place within the game world. Kinda wish that there was a bit more content here as well, because it does feel as if it ends a bit prematurely and I'd have loved to see one more shoot 'em up stage as well. One final positive note is that of the 8-bit Mario games, this is the one that I consider to have the best soundtrack by quite a wide margin. Overall I think this is a rather underrated Mario game for the virtue of being such a bold, weird experience alone, with the amazing OST, cool level design and relentless creativity just being icing on the cake. If the controls were improved and there was a bit more content to this, I'd consider it a genuinely amazing little game, but even as it stands, it's definitely worth a play, or in my case throughout the years, around 10.

Title
Fun... But Underwhelming
Super Mario Land is a neat little launch title for the Game Boy. But boy did it leave me wishing there was more.

Super Mario Land isn't anything special. It's mostly the same as every Mario game to have released at the time. Sure, it's graphically underpowered (Which isn't a bad thing as it makes sense seeing that it's on the Game Boy). But other than that, the basic gameplay wasn't anything remarkable. It's 4 Worlds, 12 levels. So it's by far the shortest Mario game in this retrospective. There's the mushroom and Fire Flower. Everything you'd expect. Yes, there are unique bosses and enemies but that's really it. It does have one thing... There is submarine gameplay. They are basically Auto-Scrolling Shooter levels. Unfortunately, there are only two of them.

What I do like... Is the plot. Bowser isn't in this. It also introduces another character. Princess Daisy... (Who was then regulated as a Spin-Off Character but I digress). Daisy, Princess of Sarasaland is kidnapped by an Alien named Tatanga. Mario must rescue Daisy and stop Tatanga. That.. Is really unique and is a nice change of pace.

The music is also pretty neat

Super Mario Land is a fun and charming game. But it left me wanting more. Good thing there is a sequel.

Title
The Super Mario Land series has been a pretty interesting platform to change up the Mario bros. formula but aside from launching Wario and Daisy as major character's in the franchise, its a hard sell if the series has really had a lasting legacy. Its definitely hard to view the first game in historical context for me considering I have an emotional attachment to its sequel, 6 Golden Coins, but this and Tetris were the initial flag ship titles for the Gameboy, for better or worse. SML takes place in an alternate kingdom with an alternate princess to rescue from an alternate, alien villain. But aside from those technicalities, it is a mario game. A clunky, mess of a mario game. By this time in the mainline series, the Mario platform formula had well and truly been perfected, this game on the other hand is such a sever downgrade in terms of control. Mario himself feels like you are trying to push a fully laden shopping cart and he feels much worse when jumping. Running is nearly out of the question given the limited horizontal space of both the GB screen and the games aspect ratio (a problem with most platformers on the console to be honest) and because of this, the entire game looks like it came from a high end Texas Instruments calculator. The only saving grace, imo, of this title is the music, it is some of the best of the franchise. A game that truly deserves a ground up remaster because there is something here to coax out and improve, sadly its current state is better left forgotten.

Title
This game wasn't even "good for its time." Source - me being disappointed as a child. As a further "source" I distinctly remember another friend whose parent's accidentally got him this instead of the second game, he was a tough kid, but he cried an ocean that day. I imagine as an adult he talks to his therapist amongst a sea of other traumas and daily negations of self he starts to dry sob and his head shakes violently as he tries to hold back memories of the moment he unwrapped that present and this game came out.

Some games require a detailed explanation as to what went wrong or right in the esteemed reviewers well researched and laid out opinion. That won't be necessary with this title it has a very clear and distinct flaw that I can rather easily summarize thusly. "Hey kid, you know the button that makes you jump? Just keeping pressing that and moving forward." -About twenty minutes later.- "WHOA-HO Way to go kid you just beat the game!"

I'm not exaggerating even the slightest bit when I say the game is that easy. It's easy to the point of it being redundant that this is a Gameboy game it could just as easily have been a Tiger electronic game or something else that rudimentary and you would barely notice a difference. I might actually be exaggerating that it takes twenty minutes to beat this game, you might beat it in less than that if you put in even the tiniest bit of effort.
I have played and beat almost every game with Mario's name on it, there are only two platformers in the whole series I think are terrible and they're both bad for the same reason they are easy to a point of absurdity. The first one being this game and the second one being New Super Mario Bros.. I actually like that the Mario games are generally still geared towards all audiences and to the extent they do have challenges they're bonus material. I don't need Mario games to be as hard as I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game. The opposite end of the spectrum is just as bad though where a game is so easy it feels like your Mario latte is all milk and no coffee. You need some amount of difficulty and well-crafted challenge to contextualize and ground the player in the world and make them feel like it matters that they're playing the game and with these two titles I just don't feel that. No enemy feels like a threat in this game, no obstacle feels hard to overcome and nothing about the gameplay feels like you earned anything.
Because of the lack of difficulty and a cascade of other negative factors, the game just doesn't feel special at all. It feels like one of the thousands of platformers that was a clone of a Mario game rather than an actual Mario game.

I just remember beating this game as a kid so quickly that I felt that at least part of my birthday was wasted asking for this game. I know it's hard to go back in time but imagine this being one of four forty to fifty dollar games your kid asks for and they beat it before the car ride home ends. Length and challenge aren't the be all end all of a gaming experience, but in this case they came together to reach a pivotal point of disappointment on a graph.

But Brent flying heads! Aside from this fatal flaw there are some minor positives. One being Princess Daisy [デイジー姫] who is the best princess. Princess Peach [ピーチ姫] is played out and Rosalina [ロゼッタ] is trash. Come at me breh.
The games music or more accurately it's one track is good, I mean against other Nintendo tracks it's nothing special but to its credit, I have never gotten tired of it even after twenty years of doing the equivalent of hate fucking this game. Granted it doesn't really add any value or prestige to the game either. You might think this is a lot to ask of one song in a video game, but if you want an example of how you can do a lot with a little, turn your ears towards the pulverizing tour de force that is Bubble Bobble's main theme.
The game has some other songs, but they aren't as memorable as it's main theme and in the grand scheme of Mario music they're pitiful. The game kind of has an international motif going on, it uses music from different "Mario lands." It manages to do a mediocre rendition of several different cultures music and a lot of it doesn't fit the general feeling or tone of most Mario games. Stepping out of my own assessment for a minute, I know some people actually like the soundtrack for its uniqueness and while I can't say I particularly enjoy it, I guess it could be a perceived positive of the game that it offers you something musically you cant get from any other title in the series.
Graphically it's a little bit festive here and there and I like the Egyptian stuff but for the most part, it's plain even for a Gameboy title. About the only real unequivocal positive, I would give this game is that there are a few shootem up levels that break up the monotony of jumping right. Genre mixing was not common at this time and I guess it shows the tiniest bit of something extra that they did this with the game. I would say this game has the worst Mario sprite and a lot of other "worsts" aesthetically concerning common enemies and items in the series.

This game was made by Gunpei Yokoi, the man who invented the Gameboy, Metroid [メトロイド], the Virtual Boy and he was the first Japanese man to wear spandex and do dabs. He was Shigeru Miyamoto's mentor. Shigeru allowed Gunpei to make a Mario title. If you want to see what happened after this game came out between the two watch the movie Harakiri [切腹]. All of Gunpei's relatives have been purged from this earth, his male heirs have been dishonored and had their man bun cut off and his name has been stricken from all records. I only know this story because I found it written on a note in a time capsule that was unearthed by the Japanese hurricane a decade back. If you read this you must now fear for your life that Shiggy the lone swordsman is coming for you.

There are some bad games that I have nostalgia for. I think the feeling itself does not automatically denote that something is good or bad, as even bad past experiences for me can be funny and entertaining to look back on in hindsight. There are some bad games that still have merit or that I can still kind of see what a person or company was aiming for with the title. This isn't either of those type of games. I don't think this a funny bad gaming experience. It's not even pleasurable in that way. This game didn't have any ambition or creativity, it was a bad aping of something that already existed. I'm trying to eliminate even the most flimsy of excuses someone can have for this game. Any remaining sympathy a person has for this game usually evaporates when they play the sequel and they realize the original Gameboy was actually capable of creating a Mario experience as fun and memorable as those on other consoles. I actually have less estimation for this game as time goes on, it just fundamentally misses the point of what is good about Mario games and doesn't really do anything positive enough in any regard to make up for that loss. I look at this game the way a disappointed father looks at a child. It's pathetic and not befitting of its name. I'm saying if I was this games father, I would ask it to " Go get the belt." I don't even believe in child abuse like that, but I think this retro game deserves a retro ass-whupping.

Don't let other Mario-heads without a mushroom try to tell you differently, my brain and body size is four times the size of theirs and I have the big mushroom tip energy to tell you presently, historically and in the future that this is the worst Mario game. It isn't better in context, it isn't better in a boat or in a chair, it's not better anywhere. To my surprise it wasn't even better on the Super Gameboy. Bitch, I'm Daisy.

This was probably my first game ever. Amazed that 7 year old me reached the cloud world but I don't think I ever managed to beat it.
