Mr X nightmare is a DLC that significantly boosts Streets of Rage 4. It adds new characters, increases enemy variety and allows the player to chose between two options for each of the characters attacks, effectively allowing you to costumize your fighter. The star of the show however is the new survival mode.
This mode takes some aspects of roguelite, namely the random enemies and level layout, as well as the powerups that it offers after each level. Its a pretty weak roguelite if you just view it through that lens, since there is a short variety of powerups, with low synergy between each other. But the mode is highly replayable and it made me gain an increased appreciation for the combat of the game, there is a high skill ceiling that only becomes apparent through the games more challenging rooms. The escalating difficulty is perfect to show the player that, in a way that the campaign failed to do so for me. There are no quiet moments or gimmicky levels in here, its just violent rage against ever increasing enemy hordes (both in quality and quantity).
Overall its an excellent add on to easily the best belt scroller out there.
