Title
Bland single player game, (almost) unrivaled multiplayer game.
Yes, the campaign for Wings of Liberty and the expansions are pretty bland and undoes the really good story mode from the first StarCraft and BroodWar. Yes, the characters are boring and the lore is uninspired. True, first StarCraft games captured sci-fi aesthetics resembling those of Alien, Aliens, and Starship Troopers much better. But man, there is no other multiplayer game quite like this, except for maybe the first StarCraft.

I still regularly play this competitively, it's just that good. No other multiplayer video game I've ever played feels as much like an actual struggle or fight against another person than this, mentally and physically. You need to build up your speed, precision, and mental endurance to be decent, and probably spend hours watching tutorials and practicing builds. But it's worth it. A 1v1 game, the most authentic way to play, feels like a cross between a chess match, hand of poker, and a round of boxing that demands the mental game of a golfer. Unlike a hand of poker however, there's basically no random chance; although people love to balance whine, it's actually very balanced and if you lose you were almost certainly outplayed, even though sometimes it can be difficult to identify exactly how.

Criticisms of RTS games being essentially massive games of Rock Paper Scissors might hold true for other games in the genre but not for StarCraft II; the game is nuanced enough that a player can beat rock with scissors by outplaying them or identifying rock in time to play paper instead. Other major RTS games like Age of Empires are similar in terms of mechanics, and are very good multiplayer games, but they're not quite as fast or intense as a match of StarCraft II. The fact that it still has a relatively large and quite dedicated base of competitive players speaks to the fact that it is a multiplayer experience like no other. One of the most satisfying experiences for me as I've improved as a player was learning how to actually have decent macro, being able to endure the harassment of lesser players for minutes on end while maintaining my focus on the most important tasks, then finally overpowering them at the end and demonstrating I was unfazed the whole time. It took a while to get there, however. In a fighting game you might have the opportunity to do something like a 10x combo on your opponent, but in a 20 minute game or so with at times hundreds of units on the map, it feels like StarCraft II allows you to do 1000x combos on your opponent. So if you feel like having one of the most challenging but rewarding multiplayer experiences out there, StarCraft II should be at or near the top of your list.

Blizzard's apparent lack of care for this is shocking however, considering how valuable of an asset the StarCraft franchise really is.

Title
A cool game marred by the fact that they split the story and unit progressions into three seperate games published with years in between all three entire. Activision-Blizzard really thought people would keep interest beyond Wings of LIberty; it's kinda sad how dumb that company and its fans can be sometimes...

My friend knew Broodwar, probably because of its reputation as the ultimate and most precise strategy game, me of course I had missed it. But then Starcraft II was coming out and we all went into it.

As my friend said, Starcraft plays like chess. What you get with Starcraft II, at its core, is a technical, amazingly balanced game of three very different races going all out at each other in a fast, nervous gameplay. The only mode to play Starcraft is online (I guess you can play the campaigns if you're bored). While certain strategy games allow you to sit back and castle, Starcraft rather encourages early agression and high pressure, and a game can turn so fast that you are sometimes legitimately terrorized of what your opponent might be doing. The online system has you play against people of a similar level. Mistakes or failures to read the other player usually end up very badly, but improbable comebacks do happen and usually feel miraculous. 1 vs 1 is the quintessential mode, but teams up to 4v4 are very fun as well.

I've mostly been playing Zerg, because I like its mass-invading style. Overall a great game to try out and then perfect your builds, hard to be topped in terms of strategy, and I'll also say the game is quite beautiful.

Last but not least, I have spent hours watching Starcraft championships (mainly the GSL) and I have no shame to say I found it more enjoyable and entertaining than most sports on TV, even if I'm not an expert player myself (at all).

Title
I remember thinking for years and years how could they possibly screw up a sequel to StarCraft? Well the stars aligned, the planets danced and my question was answered in the worst way possible. Each expansion was like another train crashing into a giant bonfire. By the end of it I just couldn't stop laughing at how absolutely wrong everything went. They made every character blander, made the story less intriguing, the game play is just objectively worse and they didn't even take a lot of what was good from their last RTS Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Yeah why would they want to take anything from a game that literally made them millions and allowed them to establish an MMO franchise that made them more money than Chris Metzen can blow on coke and Ferrari's? Why weren't lore characters heroes? Why did they remove the mission briefings? Why did they bring back characters that weren't necessary to bring back and then squander all that build up of Kerrigan as a bad ass villain? The Fenix robot pissed me off more than I can articulate. How are you gonna make a puppet out of my dead homie like that? Why was the multiplayer toolkit so limited when again millions of people bought Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos just to play modded games with their friends? Why was lan play taken out? Why did they make Kerrigan Zerg Jesus? Why were the villains motives so needlessly stupid and complicated at the same time? Why does your ass smell like that? Why Why WHY WhY wHy?

I can ask questions like this all day, best I stop now.

Things that were good: John De Lancie (Q from Star Trek) as Alarak. The music and art style.

Fight for the stars
Im probably the least qualified person of all time to discuss an RTS, but i did enjoy my time with the campaign of Starcraft 2 a lot. It plays everything so safe in terms of mechanics that i initially was disappointed with it. It still sticks to the same rock-paper-scissor mechanics that traditional RTS use. Shows how little the genre has evolved in the last 10 years. I feel that stuff like Company of Heroes is a more interesting take on the genre, and obviously the genre is in big trouble after the popularity boost for MOBAs. That said, its the polish here and how it satisfying it feels to command your troops around that elevates this title over Age of Mythology or Empires, Command and conquer or the original Starcraft.

Its a very impressive game audiovisually, and i still had this impression after 20 hours of gameplay.

Storywise i couldnt get much out of it, since i dont really understand its backstory. The characters are cliche, but they are charming in that sense. Specially Tychus. To be honest i ended up skipping most cutscenes after a while.

I did like the campaign a lot though. Each mission made you learn about the uses of one or more units, and each one had a gimmick that made each one feel unique and interesting to play. The last mission is really hard, i had to replay it 3 times, since it forces you to think well and fast. Its hard not to panick when the zerg start to overwhelm you.

Considering its a genre i have a lot of trouble getting into, i really enjoyed the time i spent with this one.
