In this flight combat game, you will pilot a few different ships performing simple objectives such as destroy certain targets, defeat waves, escort a ship etc. It all involves the same gameplay though; blow things up. The game is set around the events of Episode 1, so you will be taking on the Trade Federation. The settings are quite varied, since some are in space, and others are on the planet's surface.
Each level will usually take 7-15 minutes to complete, but there are no checkpoints and no option to restore health. This means you have to be careful. Each ship has a shield, and once depleted then you take permanent damage. The game can be quite difficult, especially when groups of enemies can quickly take you down, or other pilots will plough into you. I felt some levels involved a bit of trial and error because of this.
There's no radar, so you have to rely on your own perception, other than the single targetting reticule you can toggle. This means missions where you need to focus on a particular ship can be tricker than it needs to be because you may have to locate it yourself and manually keep track of it. Sometimes, your ally pilot's chatter can give you hints at where your attention should be, but there were a couple of instances where this was a bit misleading.
I found the final mission to be extremely frustrating, since you need to follow a particular enemy into a hangar. It's a really small area to manoeuvre and there are turrets and other enemies taking shots at you. When you get hit, the force of the laser changes your direction meaning you run the risk of ploughing into something, and need to adjust your aim again. When you move through a narrow tunnel and are trying to pull up, but a turret you cannot see is forcing your down; it is absolutely infuriating.
The graphics are a bit dated these days, but you'd expect that since it was released during the Playstation 2 era. I played on PC via Steam, and I found I had to do a bit of tinkering to get the controls right; it seemed that you couldn't toggle targets without changing the mapping.
It's a fairly short game, taking around 6 hours but you could do it quicker if you don't fail the missions. There's a bit of replay value if you wanted to go through the missions again, since you can aim for the secondary objectives.
