Being able to play a new single player Star Wars adventure seemed like an unrealistic dream for quite a while. The last single player Star Wars game (not counting Lego games) came out 9 whole years before this one (and it really wasn't good). The actions of EA (and Disney) really didn't inspire much confidence, cancelling several promising games and releasing the often-criticized Battlefront reboots instead. Despite all of this, finally Jedi:Fallen Order is here and now on Steam, so what is it like then?
The story takes place some years after the events of Episode III. You play as Cal Kestis, an ex-Padawan with the most generic face in the galaxy and the personality of a piece of wet toast. You are on the run from the Empire, who are trying to erase all traces of the Jedi. During your escape you team up with other outlaws and a cute little droid, who have some plan to save the Jedi...
Jedi:Fallen Order is a very "modern" game, not shying away from incorporating influences from other games such as Dark Souls, Tomb Raider or Metroid Prime. This is a polite way of saying that this game is a bit of a copycat, but at least it's ripping off from good games (instead of ripping you off with lootboxes). At its heart this is a really a classic hack-and-slash action game along the lines of the Jedi Knight series or The Force Unleashed in which you fight your way through hordes of stormtroopers and monsters with your lightsaber and Force powers. The combat system is quite Souls-like, with a large emphasis on parrying and dodge-rolling, also the way you restore health and respawn is pretty similar, though over all much more forgiving. The Tomb Raider influence comes in through climbing and puzzle sections (and even some actual tombs), but it thankfully doesn't go overboard with it. Finally, in typical Metroidvania fashion you are often locked out of some portions of the level until you acquire new abilities, which means you will have to revisit those places later to find powerups and explore more. I namedropped Metroid Prime because the impressive environmental design kind of reminds me of it.
So, overall, is it good? For me that's a clear yes. This is in my opinions the first worthwhile Star Wars game since Force Unleashed. I dare say that I got the feeling that the people who worked on this actually like Star Wars and really tried hard to make a worthy addition to the universe. Sadly you can't say that for other Star Wars-related things that came out recently... What I don't like so much are the uninteresting characters and the confusing map screen. It should also be clear that when a game is taking elements from so many other games, they will lack in depth compared to the originals.
