"Squad 51 vs. The Flying Saucers" gets a lot of passes for its pretty authentic 1950s science fiction imagery and theme. Aliens evade the earth, get in your ship and blast them! The game even has a few FMV cut scenes to tie it all in.
I feel like the group really wants to have another Cuphead on their hand, but it's just not quite as amusing or funny as Cuphead as for some reason the plot is relatively straightforward. You have a lot of wartime 1950s chatter between characters who you don't see very much (this is where the animal and fantastical beasts of a Star Fox or Cuphead add to the charm).
You get a bit tired of seeing the same machinery-based UFOs and laser cannons a few times between the levels as well. (Although when the Giant Godzilla or Eagle monster creatures show up, it starts having the fun which I wish was found throughout the other parts of the game). I don't think it should be a straight parody, but just that level of playfulness or personality is missing (except maybe on the very final boss, where the main baddie of the film is mocking you throughout the television screen).
Recommended if you eath/breath/sleep 1950s science fiction or are passionate about the mild revival of FMV-styled games in the recent era. Otherwise, Cuphead and Star Fox and even Sexy Parodius will fill in the void of novelty-inflected shooters.
