Spelunker is a torture device from the old era of platforming philosophy taking straight out of games like Miner 2049er and Jumpman. You die just by taking two pixels of fall distance, and sidling on ropes and ladders left and right instantly gets you falling. Dynamite explosions don't have a telegraphed range. The base game is fine and ordinary, but the controls won't let you enjoy this, and even if they were corrected they wouldn't offer anything remarkable anyway.
For some reason the NES port of Spelunker started a craze in Japan, being the definitive kusoge in that land(comparable to say, Battletoads in the West), and also starting the speedrunning craze a good couple of months before Metroid would - in large part due to Spelunker's own nonlinear nature as a half-Metroidvania. If you want to actually beat it, do it on an emulator with rewind.
