Sonic, the fastest hedgehog alive, takes on a demonic entity from the far future attempting to plunge the world into an age of darkness. The key component to their plan involves the dormant powers of a young human princess, whom after being rescued by Sonic, begins to develop intimate feelings for him.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (stylized in all caps) on Xbox 360 is the first Sonic game I owned. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG has a unique sense of ambition in its story and cutscenes that wanted me to keep going, and introduces two iconic characters to the Sonic franchise, Silver and Mephiles. The music in this game is outstanding with Aquatic Base, Crisis City and Kingdom Valley being personal favorites. While I was initially impressed by the levels and environments, its repetitiveness and absurd load times gradually killed the momentum. I was going through the same rooms over and over again as the game forces you to repeat every level at least 3 times, most with only slight variations, especially when considering Sonic and Shadow play similarly. While many reviewers criticize the glitches in this game, I believe this to be an exaggeration as they can lead to many funny scenarios and only occasionally halt progress. I was bothered by the inconsistent framerate, however, at least it tried to reach 60fps. There is no way to know what you are supposed to do every time you get to Soleanna and I had to use the internet to figure this out. Sonic is the best playable character and he can purchase gems making him even stronger. Shadow and Blaze are good, with Tails, Amy, and Silver being actual cancer, and Rouge, Omega, Knuckles being passable. Despite being titled SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, the story comes into action during Shadow and Silvers' sections, with Sonic's story being a cycle of Elise being kidnapped and rescued. Silver thinks Sonic is the Iblis Trigger, and attacks him, because he was fooled by Mephiles, who seeks to destroy the past and combine with Iblis with become Solaris. The story only starts making sense once you get to the Silver story. Soleanna is underdeveloped and the human NPCs don't get voice acting. The town missions are bland like memorizing numbers and counting boxes, and I swear there are like 30 of them that are just running through rings with a time limit.

Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) or better known as Sonic '06 is one of the worst games I ever played. It's awful. I'm happy that I'm putting this game behind me. There's a lot to digest here... Here goes
Sonic '06 had a very interesting development. Sonic's 15th Anniversary was approaching and Sega wanted to make a game in celebration of this. It was promoted to be the magnum opus of the series, a game that would redefine Sonic. It was gonna be part of the Xbox 360 launch and would also have PS3 and PC versions. The team wanted to give it a Wii port as they believed that the Wii was on par power-wise. However, when they were given development kits, they realized how underpowered the Wii was and they knew that Sonic '06 just wouldn't work on the Wii. So they split the team into two. One half would work on Sonic '06 and the other half would work on Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii. It didn't help that Yuji Naka, creator of Sonic left Sega during production. The team got smaller and smaller and due to a refusal from Sega to delay the game, the game came out unfinished and broken. Sonic '06 isn't bad because they didn't care. It's bad because of circumstances and having no time. I respect them for trying but my lord this game is a disaster.
The game came out on November 14, 2006, and sold well, but it was critically panned and soon gained a reputation of being one of the worst games ever made. The PC port was cancelled and it was humiliating. This solidified Sonic as a joke in the gaming world. Gone are the days where he was good. It ruined him.
Sonic '06 is a lot like the Sonic Adventure games in terms of how it's structured. There are 3 campaigns and doing them unlocks the last story. You got Sonic's Story where you play as characters such as Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails. You got Shadow's story where you play Shadow, Rouge, and E-123 Omega. And you got a brand new character, who was conceived as a way to play with the game's unique physics engine, Silver The Hedgehog where you play as characters like Amy and Blaze The Cat (A character from the Sonic Advance games who got retconned for this game).
Sonic's story is about saving another new character, Elise, Princess of Soleanna from Dr. Eggman who is trying to unlock her power. Sonic's story is extremely inconsistent and sometimes things just happen for no reason. Elise (Who has some of the worst acting and writing I've ever seen) is a bland damsel in distress who gets captured like 8 times. Sonic's gameplay is all over the place. He has 3 gameplay types. One where it's just him getting to the end of the level, which is filled to the brim with bugs and unfair deaths, slow gameplay, a homing attack that is so hard to aim and is generally very broken. The other gameplay type is where he carries Elise which makes all the glitches worse, and where he goes super fast. This is especially bad because if you so much as touch anything, you die and It never feels fair.
Tails and Knuckles are also playable and they are shells of their former self. Tails can only fly and throw ring bombs. And it's so boring and lazily designed. Knuckles is the same but more broken. I swear he gets stuck on walls and then dies so much. The bosses are also unfun because they are so broken and stupid.
Shadow's story is about stopping the evil Mephiles The Dark. His homing attack is worse and more slippery. There's also a delay with every homing attack. Shadow can shoot Chaos Spears to stun enemies and punch them mid homing attack. As well as unleashing a rage mode of sorts. But they are all boring and broken. He can also ride vehicles that control horribly. His own game plays better than this. Rouge has the same issues as Knuckles except she is slightly better, and E-102 Omega is just unfun in general.
Silver's story is about going back in time to prevent the catastrophic future he lives in. Silver is the slowest but has the ability to use Psychonetic Powers which allow him to lift objects and throw them at enemies. It's too hard to lift objects and you can't aim the objects you throw. And it's generally dumb. Amy is awful in this game. She has one attack and a double jump which hurt you more than it helps. Blaze is my favorite to play as but she still has issues with how she's played. Silver's bosses are too easy or too hard and make me wanna break my controller. The physics don't work for him.
The story is horribly written and none of them leave any kind of impression. Even Shadow's who has the best story can't save this one. All of these stories conclude with the final story where Sonic dies and the cast has to get the Chaos Emeralds to bring him to life and stop Solaris the Sun God. This leads to the horrible kissing scene with Elise and Sonic. They already have a weird and dumb romance but this was the nail on the head. This results in Sonic, Silver, and Shadow going super and fighting Solaris. Which actually isn't all that bad compared to everything else.
Easily the worst thing about this game besides the horribly structured story, writing, acting, and gameplay is the loading. There is so much loading in the game and it takes like 30 seconds each. It's awful and bogs the already bad pacing to a screeching halt. You would talk to someone, which leads to a long load time, they explain what to do and then it loads again, you do the thing, it loads out, they say "good job", it loads again. It's awful. It's all over the place.
Now, this game has some good stuff. The CGI Animation is pretty well done and not hard on the eyes compared to the in-game graphics. Silver is an interesting character even if he's poorly written. And the music is actually really good. It has a pretty great soundtrack with great vocal songs as well. Silver's Dream of an Absolution and the main theme, His World are pretty good. In-game songs like Dusty Desert and Crisis City is also really good. But the bad outweighs the good in every way.
Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) may have good music, CGI animation, and an interesting character like Sliver, but the game is an embarrassment on every level. Filled with awful writing, acting, and a dysfunctional story, with bugs everywhere, poorly designed gameplay, and awful loading times. I'm never playing Sonic '06 again. I just can't. Shadow The Hedgehog may have begun the Dark Ages for Sonic. But Sonic '06 is when it really set in

I played through this game (the PS3 version) in its entirety a few months ago. That's right, every single story. I found that while yes, it is a bad game, it's actually not all bad. Obviously the load screens are a problem. It's actually just fucking ridiculous how many load screens there are. Literally everything has a load screen. There are points where to initiate a mission, you will go through one line of text, have a load screen to load in the entire world again so you can be given another line of text, then another load screen to reload the entire world yet again so you can play the mission, even though the missions take place in the same already loaded area from the previous sequences. What the fuck is that? Speaking of the overworld, it's fucking terrible. There's no real map, just a radar with a tiny radius you can see and everything looks the same so navigating the overworld is a chore. It's not like there's anything interesting if you get lost either, because there's fuck all in that overworld. All there are are some people with info, people saying useless bullshit, and people who will give you town missions to earn rings, with those missions also being fucking terrible and also useless since you realistically will never need the extra rings when playing through this game unless you want every single optional skill ring, most of which are not useful, especially for a casual player, since they're extremely buggy and awkward to use. You have to take time to master their usage for them to do anything. The missions are for the most part just there, I guess for completionists or people who want to be really rich or something. The game is also, as everyone knows, unfinished and really fucking buggy. Now, this point is one I have a hard time holding against it as much as other people because if I'm being honest, the fact that it's so buggy is hilarious. I laughed my ass off playing through this game at all the ridiculous bugs I encountered, and I got even more laughs out of watching speed runs and glitch showcases (with this being a stellar game for both of those btw, this game actually has a vibrant speed run community). That said, for actually playing the game they do get fucking annoying, especially in the stage segments, because without them the stage segments might actually be, well... good. Most the stages in this game are actually extremely well designed. There are exceptions of course, like Silver's version of Dusty Desert, Shadow's version of the snow level, all versions of Aquatic Base, and all versions of the jungle stage (which are all supposed to be different stages but actually all take place on one giant stage where with bugs you can access the segments for other characters when you're not supposed to). Outside of those, the stages are filled with very rewarding to take shortcuts (when they work properly) and are fairly fun to go through. When you can actually get going fast and bouncing off enemies and going and light dashing around the levels to get shortcuts and cut your time you can almost forget you're playing such a disaster of a game. I really think the level design here is top notch and some of the best in the series, just held back by the unfinished, sloppy, slippery, and buggy nature of the game. Since I haven't mentioned it yet, I'll briefly mention the story. Yeah, it's fucking stupid. But you know what? I like it. I'm not looking for something to take seriously in a Sonic game, and so I don't take the story seriously, even if I was intended to, and I enjoy it for the vast sea of unintentional comedy provided by it throughout the game. Between that, the fun with bugs, and the good level design I feel comfortable calling this at least a 5/10 game despite its flaws. If it weren't for the horrific boss fights and overworld segments I might even give this game as high as a 7, but alas, those are part of the game so I must factor that in. Really overhated and can be enjoyable if you don't take it seriously, but yeah, game is still a disaster. Fun if you like unintentional comedy.

I played the first two levels of the game and found that it was the most singularly unengaging game experience I had ever played. It somehow combined the mediocre but somewhat relaxing platforming of the Sonic 4 games with a punishing save system and many one-hit kill bottomless pits not often seen in sonic games. This produces a game that demands your attention for completion, yet is completely devoid of challenge and engaging gameplay. The fact that you can just fall through the floor at any point doesn't really help. It is impossible to overstate just how unenjoyable this game is, even "worse" games (like Bubsy 3D) feel better to play.

Zelda II got good reviews, sold well (not as good as the first, but same is true for ALTTP and LA when they first came out) and was a beloved game in Nintendo Power polls. It wasn't until years later that people forced the "black sheep of the Zelda series" meme.
this probably does deserve the title of "worst Sonic game", not even due to its inherent qualities but for how much damage it did to the series for the next 15 years. sega was SPOOKED
