May sound like I'm shitposting, but the boss of Night Carnival has gotta be one of the most rewarding bosses in the series for me, which is kind of hard to notice for anyone who hasn't tried shooting for an S rank. There's a route you can repeat in the first half to continually fuck Eggman's shit up really quickly. Fastest time I've been able to beat him is 38:52
This is better than the best of Sonic Advance which was already great. It's more polished for starters and that's likely due to it being made on more capable hardware. It's also the first of Dimps's 2D Sonic game to evolve on an idea from an earlier game namely Sonic Advance 2. This reaps the benefits of being an evolution of boost mode on stronger hardware and when it works, it's incredible given of course the player bothers to try. That also depends on how many opportunities this game gives for the player to fully utilize Sonic's & Blaze's abilities. This means that, unfortunately, there are times when this game dips in design quality. Altitude Limit is one of the more infamous examples but I'd say that Night Carnival is this game's weakest level. There's just not a lot for the player to react to and the trick system can only provide so much. Most of the bosses range from boring to a little to demanding. The standout improvement is of course the Special Stages which are some of the best in the series.
